OZ 333/334 777 QS PEK-ICN removed from schedule

It appears that these flights are being cancelled eff. July 1

A month's notice..

Now the only other award space on the route I have left is an Air China 737

On top of that, my GMP-HND has gone from A330 to A321...

That's because OZ moves one ICN-PEK to GMP.

Good news! This means a higher chance of 777 QS on longer routes.

The renaissance of GMP and HND for international travel might be good for point to point travelers but it makes international connections more difficult.

Asiana automatically rebooked me on the GMP flight that leaves an hour earlier, which is good, because I feared that I am going to be stuck on CA which was the only carrier with award space

It is indeed good news for us Korea-based travellers as Gimpo = less hassle for short trips, and for those connecting, there will still be 2 daily.
For me, I always choose flying into GMP on my short hops to China and Japan as it is more convenient, although ICN is a much better airport.

Seems they released some landing slots at GMP or PEK, as CA, OZ, KE and MU all announced GMP-PEK from July.

I am assuming OZ will arrange a bus/AREX ticket for those affected?

The ICN-PEK-ICN was used primarily in between TPAC turns IIRC, to avoid having an aircraft sit 8 hours.

Isn't there a "city airport" like GMP or HND at Beijing as well? I know it's about the flight connections at the PEK end but there should be enough point-to-point traffic to warrant a more agile airport in the Chinese capital.

I wouldn't necessarily say that.

The tax free shops at GMP international side are perfectly adequate, the landside second floor coffeeshop/restaurant serves better quality than anything I've had at ICN and the security and emigration desk work flawlessly most of the times.

My main problem with GMP is that it seems much more crowded at all times, especially the domestic terminal. No breathing space.
But I do agree GMP is very efficient and security is a breeze.

I'm using the KTX from Seoul/Yongsan on domestic trips. No other way for a dedicated railway fan.

My routine (for international flights) is check-in about 1,5 hrs before the flight, then wind down with breakfast/lunch/dinner at the second floor coffeeshop. Then as late as possible to the airside area, grab some souvernirs on the way from tax free and entering the plane just before gate closure.

GMP must be my favourite airport by now.

We have NAY (Beijing Nanyuan Airport). It's not really much closer to town than PEK, but I like it because it isn't congested. Before the Olympics, CA and JL announced plans to fly NAY-HND, but this never panned out because the PLA (which owns NAY said, "no"). I expect we'll see a viable alternative to PEK (NAY, one of the other military airports, or a new facility) within the next 5 years.

I haven't been at GMP in many years, has it gotten that much better?

Is this something seasonal?

I have a flight scheduled for next March and see it still shows ICN-PEK:

OZ 335 Travel Class 9 Seat 777
