In flight chat

Has anyone ever successfully used the chat rooms on any airline's in flight entertainment?

Every time I go on a flight, I check at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the flight, and there is never anyone in the chat room.

I thought my best chance would be a full A380 on a flight from Hong Kong to LGR, but it was still empty!

Personally I've never understood why this is offered and I've never used it.

I managed an online chat on the A380. Only with my teenage daughter in the row behind though!

Wow, that's a long flight. What was flying over Antarctica like? I assume this was a chartered flight, why were you going to Cochrane?

If you want to socialise on a plane, choose an airline with an on-board bar, like VS or EK

I've tried it a couple of times and also found no playmates...

Why would you want to use a chatroom to contact total strangers on a plane. Unless there is a hook up angle I am missing it seems totally bizarre.

Still, I guess better than the annoying people who want to talk all the time.

If you want to be social, fly KLM and try their Facebook pre-seating function!

I managed to use it to chat with my wife, happily ensconced in CW, while I was slumming it in WT+. Instead of trying to communicate across the curtain, or worse breach through the rope, it served its purpose and was quite funny.

I think it is only available on the latest Thales IFE, i.e. on A380, B77W and B787, plus some refurbs dotted around the fleet. More competent members of the forum will be able to be more precise, I am sure!

The interface is not exactly user friendly as yoiu have to alternate between using the touchscreen and typing with the keyboard, but all in all just about usable. The keyboard is a bit slow and you need to press buttons fairly hard to register the character.

I've used it to chat to a colleague, when we were split across a rammed WT cabin.

served its purpose, but a bit flaky when trying to watch IFE at the same time.

It's news to me as well. But I can certainly imagine the children would have used this when they were younger (all 18+ now.) Could also imagine the value when travelling to/from events with colleagues or when one discovers a large number of people one knows on a flight all headed to the same event. But even then I would have to be in the mood to want to engage; that varies when travelling.

I similarly went it to it a few times during a recent trip to NRT on one of the new IFE equipped 77Ws. Never saw anyone on there. You can send a message to a specific seat. I was almost tempted to say hi to 1A, but I suspect if I had done the csd would have quickly come over and told me to stop bothering the other passengers.
