I have quite a few airmiles from AF, if I set up an AE account can I then transfer those miles to avios when/if the deal is done?

Not a good idea according to some!

The owners of British Airways have been advised to swerve the acquisition of Air Europa, Spain’s third-largest airline, and let the company ‘fail and go under’. The fall of the Mallorca-based airline would potentially see the loss of 6,000 jobs, mostly in the Madrid area. Analysts at British behemoth Barclays Bank made the recommendation in a hard-hitting report to the chiefs of International Airlines Group (IAG), which also owns Spanish airline Iberia.

Does this not fail at the first step, or is there a way to transfer FB to Suma?

Surely any competition bodies will have a field day with this for the domestic market. Iberia, Vueling and now UX?

I have status with UX but always found cheaper deals with IB and VY.

What’s the likely timeline for “absorbing” SUMA into Avios/whatever?

In other words - is it still worth crediting SkyTeam flights to SUMA, in search of the low-threshold status (and poss match to OneWorld upon completion?), or give up on SUMA now and go with Flying Poo/Delta/other?

Google has not proven to be my friend on this occasion (probably because nobody has a clue!)

I'd love to know this as well.
That and any transfer of status (have with SkyTeam but not with OW)

Nobody really knows. Because SUMA doesn't really have enough partnerships for IAG to keep it going, I'm working on the assumption that:
  1. Suma miles will be converted to Avios
  2. Suma will be merged into Iberia Plus, including a status match
  3. Some Skyteam members will try to keep Suma elites with a status match offer
I can't see any reason for BA/IB to offer a status match for any non-SUMA Skyteam elites. But they will certainly want to hang on to existing SUMA elites, and they can't do that without offering to maintain status perks...

But yes, I am gambling on my Suma Gold status (26 flights in 12 months) becoming IB+ Gold status in 2024, possibly once IB+ turns over to its new elite year on 1 April.

Does anyone have any update as to when Air Europa will leave SkyTeam? Hoping to fly LGW-MAD in February/March 2024 and credit to Flying Blue.

Shame for some but probably predictable given how long the whole saga has been going on.

If they stay in Skyteam, at least it still gives me an option to spend my Virgin Miles .

On the subject of other Spanish airlines — it’d be nice if LEVEL and Vueling got properly integrated into OneWorld as options with tier points as well as Avios earning and elite benefits.

Is that ever going to be on the cards?

im not that fussed, suspect AE would have been just ‘heavy baggage’. IAG can do everything AE does if they really wanted to and just let AE naturally involute.
