Goodness I never knew that. Presumably, another hidden benefit of gold? Even when logged in as a Gold member I have looked at HBO fares but always received the warning about allocation taking place at check-in. This forum is such a fount of information.

Even on hbo, free seat selection is available for golds and silver at time of booking, and 7 days out for bronze
No hidden gold benefit

It's available to anyone with status at the appropriate time - so point of sale for Silver and Gold, T-7 for Bronze.
.
That is the only benefit though - you can't use your extra bag allowance to be able to check one in.

Yes, when Basic was first introduced in 2016 there was no advanced free seating (the 24 hour amend / refund was there though), though there was a backdoor if you bought via a BA approved travel agency such as Amex or Carlson WagonLits - these did have free seat selection for all their customers. This was the topic of much discussion in this forum since there were some workarounds beyond that (e.g. the self service machines). But in 2019 this was widened to all BAEC status from Bronze above, and their oneworld equivalents.
