Thumbs down Cathay Pacific to Fly Over Russia

As per Bloomberg, CX has decided in its wisdom that it will overfly Russia because other airlines are doing so and there are no sanctions that block such flights.

The article only specifically cites NYC so far as using the so-called "Polar Route": CX in a statement said: The Polar Route provides a safe, direct and the fastest flight experience to our customers traveling from the East Coast of North America to Hong Kong," and allows for pax / cargo maximisation.

They should be happy as Mainland China haven't opened up yet, or else their load factor will suffer due to their long travel time compared to Chinese airline's offering at an even cheaper price.

Could the Russians force a Cathay plane from New York to land over their territory and hold the passengers hostage? Surely the American authorities wouldn't let this flight path to connect to one of their cities???

I doubt very much Russia would do anything to antagonise China which includes doing anything to a Chinese/Hong Kong registered aircraft. Nothing to gain at all.

Air India has never stopped flying over Russian airspace for their JFk flights. Also, CZ will be resuming JFK service soon and I wouldnt be surprised if they took the polar route as well.

Could that also mean the European routes can resume flying a northerly routing over Russia?

Unclear whether its due to unfavorable wind or MX, CX829/01Nov is now diverting to KIX after a 4hr delay from YYZ.

CX841/01Nov, on the other hand, is flying straight north and looks to be the first CX flight to re-utilize Russian airspace

I think YYZ, BOS and ORD-HKG will gradually re-use polar route

Emirates has been flying over Russia on their West Coast flights for a while as well...

I'm more curious what are the alternate airports in case of bad weather in HKG like today... If the flight has to be diverted, where would it go? Would China or Macau allow for the plane to land given the quarantine rules for all passengers?

I thought typically it's TPE or KHH.

Russian airlines also banned European carriers from flying over there airspace. As the article states: "In response to the measures, the Russian government has banned flights from several European countries..."

MNL TPE and KHH are diversion airports because CX has established operations at these airports.
