Or you can fly NW, where companion upgrades have last priority after Plats, Golds, and Silvers.

interesting topic but what does your god have to do with it?

Reminds me of one of my favorite bumperstickers from Northern Sun, a wacky merchant in MSP: Militant Agnostic: I don't know and you don't either

This here thread is particularly asinine IMHO... and the whole "sent home to mommy in a box without a head thing" is really unnecessary.

Thanks for the link, JonNYC! Quite a snapshot.

Asinine... great word. Floors me to see how many people want to throw down the red carpet for people who may or may not be good humans - being in the military doesn't automatically make 'em ready for friggin' canonization.

AGNOSTIC?? If I saw some godless S.O.B. driving around with a "Militant Agnostic" bumpersticker I'd follow 'em home and burn a question-mark in their lawn...

Trying to get back to the original thread:

As a Gold Elite, I may get bumped when a Plat upgrades a companion. Those are the rules and that's how it works. If I am not happy about it -- I can try to make Plat for '03.

If you want to upgrade someone (known to you or a stranger) that is absolutely your prerogative. If it's a little old lady, or someone in uniform, or someone who simply has a nice smile -- go for it.
</font>
The rule actually is that you can upgrade passengers travelling on the same itinerary as you and not just any random person that you meet at the airport. If you ask the gate agent inspite of knowing the rule, as it exists, and the agent bends it for you, remember that you were plain lucky and it wasn't really your prerogative to deny those who deserve those FC seats ahead of your companion who was not booked on the same itinerary as you .
Now if you want to give up your FC seat for anyone you meet, that's your prerogative.

From CO.com:_
Companion Upgrades
Platinum Elite and Gold Elite members may extend their upgrade benefit to one companion traveling on the same itinerary on Continental Airlines, Northwest Airlines, America West Airlines and Copa Airlines flights.

At check-in, Platinum and Gold Elite members should present their Elite card to the airport representative within two hours of their flight departure. If space is available, the airport agent will upgrade the companion to First Class/Business Class. Companion upgrades are valid with any paid fare and on a first-come, first-served basis, when seating is available.

my apologies to mr. snake for causing this off topic thread to come up again (pun intended) but... as much as i love sarcasm i sense this comment was for real...

"AGNOSTIC?? If I saw some godless S.O.B. driving around with a "Militant Agnostic" bumpersticker I'd follow 'em home and burn a question-mark in their lawn..."

....inquiring minds want to know.
btw i thought the bumpersticker was funny.

also,
i am a but a lowly silver. as such we, bottom dwellers, would appreciate the few crumbs left for our chance at the front of the bus. with all respect to gold and plat please don't make a huge effort to upgrade total strangers. i do however think it is perfectly acceptable to give up your seat. for example; you are traveling with your adolescent child, you spot a priest flying solo and feel a 5 hour nonstop seated with a man of the cloth would be a positive life experience for your son or daughter. you trade seats. it's a win win. you feel great (good deed) the padre feels great (good wine)and love is in the air.
i digress - i will apolgize now. sorry, this is not the forum for my ranting. i have a chronic problem - i see intolerance, i'm compelled to point it out. see... i'm doing it again... ok, a sincere moment, this is a great message board. i have learned so much here from a lot of very informed, bright, articulate, people. thank you.

ps - would heinrich himmler be considered military personnel?

Your welcome.

But if you think I was serious-- that I can't help you with.

Intolerantly yours,

JonNYC

I did my part this weekend. Was in STL on a mileage run and noticed a guy with a USO patch on his shirt earlier, then saw him in my gate area as well. I asked the GA if there was space available on the flight in FC. Got him upgraded to MEM. The GA was quite suprised and commented to me "That was really good of you..." Did my little part for FT and country.

Umm.. Maybe this equation may help spell things out:

a little boy + a lonely priest = love in the air

Oh come on now.....I was flying yesterday from DCA to EWR and sat right across from a Fr. Frank? Arrived in EWR and was met by 10 NYC cops who whisked him to the PC. His entourage was discussing his trip on Alitalia later in the day. Not really friendly-I tried to start some small talk and he ignored me. Guess he was trying to ready himself for his visit with the Pope this week.
