How early can you check bags on international flights?

How early can you check bags on international flights?
I'll be flying MIA-LHR later tonight. I'm arriving from MSP at 1pm and the flight doesn't leave until 6:35pm. How early can I check my bags onto the MIA-LHR flight? If I check them early does that give them a better chance of being lost? Thanks for your help.
P.S. I love Delta's baggage tracking system. I can see that my bags made it on my MSP-MIA flight and that makes me happy!
