I read that earlier. And when I read the headline of about the worthless bowl games, the Independence Bowl immediately came to mind. The story talked about a snow storm back in 2000. I seem to remember one long before that was a freaking blizzard there.

You forgot the '54 Chevy pickup sitting on concrete blocks in place of wheels.

I'm glad to have moved for a bunch of reasons, but the Independence Bowl actually isn't one of them. It provided a decent distraction to an otherwise dull existence.

Now if I could just sell my house; but alas, it seems that people are leaving faster than they can repopulate, there being a man shortage, after all. (Actually, there isn't be a shortage of men if they count the prison population.)

Yeah, the Independence Bowl is a great attraction for those who live there, it only sucks for those who have to come there.

Uh-oh---we may have a language barrier. I never thought I had an accent until recently. Think anyone will understand my southern twang, orme, understand their minnesotean???? ISH ????
If you really want to stay warm, just go to a bar and order the state drink of Wisconsin.

"This has happened to me in Chicago, San Francisco, Kansas City, Los Angeles, NYC. I go into a bar and ask for my favorite drink (also known as Wisconsin's proudest moment of liquid defiance) "Brandy old fashioned.....sour." The bartender will always shake his head and say, "Never heard of it". Not to worry. I always carry the recipe in my wallet. Remember, if you are from Wisconsin, it's your duty to drink this drink. No other state, except the U.P.(which is ours anyway) has a clue. It's # 3 on my list of 128 things that make us different. In the above picture, Wisconsinology Co-Editor Carole Landis is seen enjoying this distinct and delicious drink. Here it is...and yes there can be slight variations.

Start with an 8 -10 oz Old Fashioned glass (a rocks glass)

Add 1 sugar cube and soak it in angostura bitters - saturate the cube - no more,no less.

a splash of soda. Sweet =7-up Sour = Grapefruit soda or Grafs 50/50

Muddle the sugar/bitters/soda mixture until frothy. Please use a muddler. This is so important.

wait 15 seconds. The frothy mixture needs air time.

Add 2 -3oz of good brandy. I prefer Korbel. One quick stir(optional).

fill glass with ice and top off with earlier choice of soda (sweet or sour)

Garnish with cherries, orange, lemon, or broccoli

Lift glass, think about Robert La Follette and Fuzzy Thurston. Say something
German, Polish, Waloon, Dutch, Hmong, Spanish, Norwegian, Welsh, Irish, Icelandic, Danish, French Canadian, Swiss, Slovenian, bohemian, Finnish,Ukranian, Russian, etc etc etc etc you get the picture."

http://wisconsinology.blogspot.com/2...-not-beer.html

Then, with your accent, they will think you are from Southern Wisconsin.

I know how to decorate it just the way it was meant to be decorated! Dovster can count on me to do it right.

See above....I can decorate the one you rented while up there, also, if you'd like. Get one with a leaning, rotting front deck, if possible.

Sounds really good---although if I drank several, they'd never understand a word I said!

Except that aucarol is coming to Minnesota, not Wisconsin. The poor girl is already have trouble reconciling herself with that fact, so let's not confuse her with any of that weird Cheese Head stuff from over the border.

If she really needs to drink, she can let us know & I'll bring a stash of pickled herring & aquavit over around 8 a.m. when we start the move.

Right now it's too cold for anything to rot. If you can bring another Alabaman along, maybe he can do the "hold my beer and watch this" gig & drive through the deck.

Good girl! Here's some supplementary material: Duck, Duck, Gray Duck.

Forget that, see later post regarding pickled herring and aquavit (water of life).

Hahahahaha!!! That's adorable, Cornroaster!

You got me curious and I had to do a bit more research. (It's easy to get my interest when you start talking mixology, etc )

This was useful reading for me, though you may be more familiar with the history!

Solving the mystery behind Wisconsin's real state drink

Does this drink accompany the Friday Fish Fry?

PS I have a friend here who lived for years in Madison, I'll have to ask her about this!

You're entitled to your opinion. However, as a prospective Norwegian, the pickled herring is not optional.

Also, please note that a, e and ć are three distinct letters in the Norwegian alphabet.

Speaking of drinks, I ran across one that comes from Brighton, UK that was suitably named for a New Year's Eve cocktail. Not sure I'd like it, but the Daily Telegraph calls it 'surprisingly delicious.' Hmmmmm.....???? Good name, though!

THE RESOLUTION

15ml Pedro Ximénez sherry
10ml Grand Marnier
Champagne
Angostura Bitters
White sugar cube

Place the Angostura-infused sugar cube in a champagne flute.

Shake the PX and Grand Marnier over ice and pour over the sugar.

Top up with champagne and garnish with a long orange twist, wiping the rim with it as you do so.

Sounds good! Here are five of my resolutions to accompany the liquid version-

1) Gain weight. At least 30 pounds.
2) Stop excersizing. Waste of time.
3) Read less. Makes you think.
4) Watch more tv. I’ve been missing some good stuff.
5) Procrastinate more. Starting tomorrow.
