Corrrect, as you will be leaving the Schengen space in CDG, that is where you go through passport control. 1 hour should be ok, unless the queues for immigration at 2E are long. You will also be going through security at that point.

Cheers,

I flew DUB-CDG-JFK a week ago. Had to show my passport in DUB and CDG at the gate (and of course in JFK too but with GE). I checked a bag but didn't have to recheck it in CDG, but I did have to reclear security.

I had a 1:45 connection. Plane landed near some manure field (or so it seemed) and we had to take a bus to the terminal. Some guy shoved his way through everyone to get off the plane quickly but must have felt like a schmuck when he found himself standing next to the same people on the bus he just pushed past (and no that wasn't me even though feeling like a schmuck is my natural state).

Fortunately I didn't have to switch terminals but I had to go to a different gate area. Turns out I had plenty of time to hit the AF lounge which was nice but very crowded. I assume BCN-CDG is also in terminal 2E?

Skip the laundry at home. Six hrs in NYC should not be wasted doing laundry. It can wait 'til you are back in SLC. And I hope you weren't planning to drop off the laundry for Mom to do while you visit friends.

In fact, if it is all one itinerary, you can check the luggage through all the way to SLC. You pick it up in JFK, walk it past Customs, and then drop it off one moment later.

^ Do not ask Mom to do laundry for you.

Also don't mind the passport control deal... would rather just do GE at JFK and call it a day.
For aviation purposes, pretend the Schengen countries (which is almost--but not quite--coterminous with the EU countries) are just like flying within the U.S. Travel within them does not require any immigration controls, and all immigration controls are done at the entry point into the Schengen block when flying in and at the exit point out of the Schengen block when flying out.

It's really quite simple when you think of it that way.

There is one difference. When you fly into the U.S. your baggage goes through Customs at the port of entry. In Europe, it goes through Customs at your final destination.

I guess it can wait. It's just I have stuff at home that I won't be bringing to Europe with me, so I do need time to repack. And it being a Saturday, I want to allow extra time to get to and from JFK.

They are two separate itineraries. Everything I bring with me to Europe won't be going back to SLC with me, and I have stuff at home that I'll be bringing back here with me that I won't have in Europe. So I do want to have at least a few hours to get everything done.

If you land in T4 you can reminisce over your European experience through the underbelly of Queens by taking the Q10 home. Plus you save $5.

Heh that's actually more like save $30 I think I probably will take a cab though as I am under time pressure. I may take the train back to the airport though if the timing works since the LIRR has cheaper rates on weekends (really don't want to deal with the subway on a Saturday afternoon and two large bags).

Back to college. Gotta get re-adjusted to this again...
