Upgrade avenues for AA marketed multi-city trip
Hello,
I've a multi city trip in J coming up bought via AA (waaaaaay cheaper than EY for the same flights) JFK-AUH-LHR-LAX. It's EY-EY-AA metal sold as AA9070-EY17-AA135 codes.
I have no status with AA, I am One World Emerald via BA, but I believe EY doesn't care about that.
I'd like to upgrade to the apartment for the JFK-AUH leg. Does EY offer any upgrade opportunity before the actual departure day? If not, what are the chances of an offer at checkin at the airport and how much is that usually?
To re-ticket the whole journey with that leg in F, bumps up the price considerably. Was looking for a cheaper avenue. I know, might be a bit of a unicorn.
thank you!

you just have to ask at check in. if there are open seats they'll offer an upgrade. no idea how much it would be for, but I'm sure it'll be more than $1000. sometimes they'll offer an upgrade bidding process before check-in -- a few days out? But that might just be for people who have purchased directly through Etihad.
