General
Upgrade space is capacity controlled, separately from revenue space in J cabin. The number of seats released to the different upgrade types are driven by a number of factors, but never by the "there are unsold seats in J cabin, let's fill them" policy some other airlines employ. Same applies with upgrades to Premium Economy.
Upgrades now book into fare bucket U, which is also used for business class awards. Note that availability tools such as Expertflyer etc. may or may not show correct U availability as AY tends to offer additional U availability to Plats and Lumos, and this hidden availability is not shown by non-AY affiliated availability tools. Premium Economy upgrade availability is in bucket F, with the above disclaimers applying similarly.

The searches below very often show zero availability. Very few directly confirmable seats are released in particularly longhaul J. Waitlisted upgrades are checked at T-59, 21, 10, 5 days, and at T-37 hours.

- varies, expect to pay some hundreds of euros for long haul one way

- the upgrade will be processed and paid for at the check-in desk of the airport of departure
- most likely the above means the airport of departure of that particular flight, so to upgrade HEL-BKK on a CPH-HEL-BKK itinerary, you would need to contact (transfer) check-in at HEL

- the decision whom to upgrade on a particular flight seems a bit random but is at least partially dependent on the price of your ticket, booking class and status
- AY highest tier members (Lumos, Plats, Golds) are prioritised with the travelling party size affecting upgrade priority (i.e. if only one seat is available in J, the party will not be split)
- you will receive points/miles according to your original economy class booking class (this may require a retroclaim if earning on other programmes than AY+)

Does that always work? Or does there need to be upgrade availability on the SH segments.
I never did a LH-upgrade only SH where the northern Europe segment is also included and there AY needed to create first upgrade availability on the feeder.

Also, the connection time needs to be <24hrs (or whatever can be considered a true connection, rather than a stopover..) otherwise the LH upgrade will not include the SH feeder segment.

Upgadability onfirmed. I've also done this via customer service when the award bucket for Y was full. They write an X class ticket for Y anyway but upgrade to J. But I think I've used vouchers. Don't know about points.

Just to add to the confusion: awards booked via partners seem ineligible. I have an award flight in X booked with BA Avios. Flight marketed and operated by AY, but ticket of course issued from 125 stock (BA). There is F availability on my flight, but an upgrade was not possible online nor with the app. Called CS, and the answer I got was a very insecure-sounding "Mitenkδhδn se nδissδ on?" The agent was not completely clueless, though he knew that AY X awards are upgradable with vouchers. He went to check with someone and then came back to let me know that for awards via partners, it's not possible.
I might try again at the airport on the day of my flight, though.

I can confirm - I had several X upgraded with vouchers. Very useful when there's no U availability but F bucket still available. I called the CS, explained the situation, she typed away and booked me. Also works even when there's no X anymore, but F is still available.
Also, (OT), happened to me that equip was swapped to smaller one and I lost the "value" of upgrade -> insisted to remove F and fly in economy -> agent refused since ecocabin was overbooked now. First time I "HAD" to fly Business class which I did not want <> E90 plane with an obese guy with you cramped to the window, no good to enjoy business class... had few mails to plat line and finally they gave me back points

What about upgrades of a person different from the account holder? it seems AY platinum booking in J can upgrade up to 3 family members, so I assume that 2 travellers including 1 AY platinum could be upgraded with points if the flight has F2 availability: first the platinum upgrades himself, second as he is flying J, he can upgrade a family member (or any companion?).
Now, this leads me to understand that a non-AY-platinum cannot upgrade anyone else (family or not, same PNR or not) except himself. Do I unfortunately understand it correctly?

AY+ Gold and Platinum members can additionally upgrade anyone with vouchers.
AY+ Platinum members can upgrade their family members flying with them with a points discount if the Platinum member has a revenue J ticket.

Thanks Jainzar! I have reread the platinum benefits and indeed, it is a 50% discount per round trip, did not see it was round trip when I read it and it looked like the standard rates.
One more question: to upgrade anyone, should the additional persons be on the same PNR with the account holder, or it does not matter and I can use my points (AY blue/basic member) to upgrade anyone regardless if I fly with them or not?

Using the website you can easily upgrade anyone without flying yourself. I just did that a few days ago.

A couple of years ago, when I upgraded something like MAD HEL TLL round trip (so only MAD HEL MAD was in J), I got lounge access in Helsinki outbound and also in TLL inbound. If it has changed... then I need to review my strategy. Thanks for the input!
