IC Lisbon
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Two stays:
1) Booked Classic Queen, used CSU to upgrade to King Suite Junior Suite 2 weeks prior to arrival. Got upgraded to Prestige Suite (123 sq. m.) day before check in, saw it in the app
2) Booked Classic Queen with rewards points for one night, got Premium King Corner at check-in
How are the rooms?
Prestige Suite is in my top rooms of all time (Prime Minister's Suite at Chateau Laurier, Frontenac and Churchill Suites at Chateau Frontenac, Shenandoah Suite at Fairmont Washington DC, all from my good old Fairmont (not Accor) Platinum days) and bigger than my appartment in Paris was. Very nicely decorated, felt like I had my own residence in Lisbon and made for a great stay. Well-lit, lots of windows, comfortable bed, great shower, nothing to complain about.
Premium King Corner was your standard IC premium hotel room, nothing to complain about there either
How is the exec. lounge?
Staff everywhere in the hotel are great but especially so in the lounge. The breakfast spread is quite good, you can order from the kitchen. The eggs benedict and the veg omelet I ordered were excellent and delivered in a timely manner, piping hot. The F&B at the hotel is quite good relative to other ICs (especially North American ones), did not make it to the evening canaps as I was out and about in Lisbon
What was good and what was bad?
Good:
Made me feel like an RA
Excellent staff that is very responsive and professional
I actually like the location which is outside the touristic hot spots but easily accessible by foot or metro
Got to use my F&B rewards for the first time, club sandwich at the bar is quite good, hot fries make all the difference!
Great Portuguese chicken place you can walk to (A Valenciana)
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
I thought I got excellent value for my money on both stays, cannot wait to go back next time I am in Lisbon

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked a base room. Upgraded to a high (30th) floor deluxe room with a view directly onto PKiN (Palace of Culture and Science).
How are the rooms?
Quite comfortable. Mine had a sizable work space, good blackout drapes, a well-appointed bathroom with tub & shower, and plenty of electrical outlets/USB ports. I noticed a few maintenance issues—front door didn’t close securely on its own (reported on departure), security peephole was half unscrewed (fixed myself), and the sink stopper mechanism didn’t work (fixed that, too)—but things were generally in good order with minimal wear.
How is the exec. lounge?
N/A
What was good and what was bad?
GOOD:
Liked the location convenient to multiple tram lines and bus 175 to/from airport. It’s easy to head south into Mokotow on a tram/bus to the better restaurants; take a short tram ride (or walk 20 minutes) to Nowy Swiat; or hop on a tram to points of interest in the north (POLIN museum, Old Town).
Room was comfortable, with firm bed, plenty of hot water, and good water pressure in the shower.
The breakfast buffet is extensive & delicious. Numerous offerings of hot food (bacon; sausages; Chinese dumplings; eggs. including made-to-order omelets), cheese, fruit, cold meats and fish—and all of it is excellent. Servers were friendly & generally attentive.
Diamond/Ambassador recognition was excellent. On top of the benefits listed below, the hotel was happy to check me in despite a rather early arrival ~11am.
Received the obligatory ~$20 (90 PLN) food/beverage credit good at any of three somewhat overpriced venues (Sliska cafe; DownTown restaurant; +One Bar). Note, however, that the credit can be used only for menu items and the automatic service charge; it cannot be used toward an additional tip.
Complimentary bottled water was reliably replenished each day.
Also received a welcome gift of wine, a macaron, some dates, etc. But see below for how this was subsequently mishandled.
BAD:
Apart from the minor maintenance issues noted above, my chief gripe is with housekeeping, which was erratic at best. One day they took away the used bathrobe but didn’t replace it. I left a short note the next day atop the other robe, also used, asking to have two; this solved the problem. On the second day, both used washcloths disappeared & we never got any new ones.
Most irritatingly, the tray of welcome gifts was spirited away on day three even though I’d left a note atop it explicitly asking to have it left. (The more delicate items I’d put under an inverted drinking glass to prevent them from going stale, so it’s not as if things had gone bad.) Given that this happened the same day I left the bathrobe note, I doubt this was a language issue.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
This was a great value at ~60K points for four nights, using the Fourth Night Free benefit. The housekeeping flubs definitely detracted from my experience, but I’d stay here again with no hesitation.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
I booked a classic king room on points. Was offered a corner king on the 3rd floor or regular king on the 12th floor. Took the regular king on the 12th which had a nice view with a glimpse of the San Francisco Bay
How are the rooms?
Rooms has a classic style, which is the style of the hotel. The bed was very comfortable. Bath had a tub/shower combo which was sufficient.
How is the exec. lounge?
Did not have access. Is located in a second within the restaurant on the lobby level.
What was good and what was bad?
There was a wedding event this weekend and there was noise from the hallway auditable in the room in the middle of the night, woke up P2. This is our third stay and overall we like the hotel and location. Breakfast quality declined compared to the visits in 2022.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Overall good value, I would return.

Were you (or for multi-stayers are you generally) happy with the hotel/stay?
Yes
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked 1 King Classic using free night certificate. Upgraded to 1 King Classic High Floor a few days before. Asked about upgrade at check-in, and front desk staff asked if 2 Twins work for us, and upgraded to 2 Twin Premium Club Lounge Access High Floor.
How are the rooms?
The room was on the 19F and quite large. The 19F had two areas, one with the club and a couple conference rooms, and another with our room and the 155 sqm suite.
Our room had nice view over the city and Ljubljana Castle.
Bathroom was large with separate toilet and fully-enclosed shower stall.
Plenty of outlets, mostly clean, except for some wine stains on the floor.
How is the exec. lounge?
Excellent view with plenty of drink choices, but food and alcoholic beverages only available at certain hours.
Did you receive a welcome gift?
No. The welcome leaflet mentioned welcome gifts and snacks but didn't receive any. Also didn't receive the $20 credit. Since we were given club access and spent most of our time out of the hotel, didn't bother asking.
How was the minibar?
There was an Nespresso machine with a few compatible capsules (some did not work) as well as a couple bottles of water. Fridge was empty.
What was good and what was bad?
The good:
- Well-designed and generally clean room
- Recognition of status and meaningful upgrade
- Friendly staff
- Excellent breakfast
- Great location for exploring the old town
The bad:
- Extortionary parking fee (EUR 35). Parked under the office building across the street for EUR 6
- Stains on the floor in the room
The ugly:
- Wi-Fi is not encrypted
Value for $ or Priority Club Points?
Paid a free night certificate so excellent value.
Would you return?
Absolutely if have opportunity to visit Slovenia again.
Yes

IC St. Paul Riverfront
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Booked King River View Private Access; upgraded to Junior King Corner Suite River View on an Executive Floor (17). No idea if the room was nominally “private access” or not—see below.
How are the rooms?
A very mixed bag. Despite really dirty windows, the view south from the 17th floor was spectacular, taking in the river, Raspberry Island, several bridges (both auto & rail), and the St. Paul Downtown Airport.
Room layout was good, starting with an entry hall and coat closet. Next was the sitting room with two swivel tub chairs, a rolling desk chair and generous work area on a long side table we also used for bar service, and small fold-out sofa bed. Natural light in this room was good, although after dark the in-room lamps couldn’t bring the illumination above cocktail-lounge level.
Between the sitting room and the hallway to the bathroom/bedroom was a pocket door for additional privacy if desired. Just past this to the interior side was the bathroom, which featured a good number of well-placed towel hooks near the Italian-style shower, something a lot of hotels inexplicably fail to provide IME. Double sinks were a useful feature, along with illuminated makeup mirror, black washcloth (for makeup removal), and a generous assortment of bath amenities (comb, earplugs, nail file, mouthwash, etc.).
The bathroom had a sliding door—doubling as the door for the adjacent clothes closet—which isn’t my favorite owing to poor sound attenuation. OTOH, brownie points for having a non-slamming toilet seat and a rather new, well-functioning shower head.
The bedroom was well arranged, with lamps, a table, and outlets on both sides, plus a combination dresser & upholstered bench (which could easily serve as a second luggage stand). Bed was comfortable, with four large pillows.
Unfortunately, there were quite a number of shortcomings. The blackout drapes were properly opaque, but both those & the sheer curtains didn’t work well owing to various problems with the ceiling tracks & how the dresser (and large TV atop it) were too close to the wall, blocking curtain pullback.
HVAC was terrible. It wasn’t clear whether the two thermostats (in sitting room & BR) did anything at all. Even with the sheers drawn, on sunny days it was quite warm in the room, and dialing the thermostat down to 55F(!) had no apparent effect. The cover on the bedroom unit was loose & could not be properly resecured.
Overall, the room had a lot of visible wear, and more than a little water damage to the baseboards (from condensation, or perhaps rain seepage), one of which had warped off the wall. There were long gouges in the sitting-room floor where something heavy—perhaps a duffel or trunk with metal feet—had been dragged from the entryway to the bedroom.
One afternoon I came back to the room to find that one of the ventilation panels—metal slats under the windows that can be pulled inward for fresh air—had opened in the heavy wind. It was very hard to keep it shut, as the latches on this panel and all the others had extensive accumulated corrosion and/or dirt and grime.
Lots of loose handles & towel hooks, which is a peeve of mine, although I can’t recall the last hotel I stayed at where this sort of thing got enough timely attention. I may start traveling with a small Allen wrench kit. : )
How is the exec. lounge?
Also a mixed bag. Multiple large TVs on 24/7 with sports chatter programming (bad) muted (yay!).
All-day items were cold canned soda, bottles of still & sparkling water, two kinds of fruit yogurt, Chex mix, Clif Bars, potato chips, and choc-chip cookies. There’s also a Lavazza coffee machine.
A very meager breakfast offering was set out. Hot items were small bowls of bacon, scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, and stewed apples. Cold items: a few cold cuts & chunked cheese, plus cold cereal & milk and a selection of fruit juices. For anything other than regular milk (in a carafe next to the juices), you had to ask a staff member if one could be found.
Starting around 5:30pm, sometimes earlier, staff put out small platters of hot items like Chinese ravioli with spicy sauce, chicken fingers with BBQ sauce, etc. Beer & wine theoretically offered, although the lounge was usually unstaffed, so you had to wait for for the (rather infrequent) staff visits to ask for a drink. More below on staffing issues ….
The computer/printer setup is very subpar. It’s not ideal to have the lone machine running Windows 7 [sic], but the bigger problem was that on Day One the lone printer showed as offline; I ended up having to email a document to the front desk to have it printed. Two days later, after some IT person had serviced the setup, the printer was online but errored out if you tried to print to it from any application.
What was good and what was bad?
GOOD:
Where to start?
At check-in, the FDC initially refused to give me a voucher for restaurant breakfast, asserting that as long as a Diamond receives some sort free breakfast (e.g., lounge), there is no obligation to grant the full restaurant meal given other Diamonds. I pushed back and got a one-time, “as a courtesy” voucher, which left me several additional days short. It took a time-consuming call to Diamond support to have the hotel set straight.
Breakfast in the restaurant was woefully understaffed. I waited over 20 minutes one day without even getting coffee, at which point I bailed & went to the lounge to have the second-rate breakfast.
One of the three elevators—presumably the “private access” one serving only upper floors—was out of commission. Elevator service was fine at midday on a Tuesday, but when the hotel was fuller on account of onsite conferences or local events at the Xcel Center nearby, delays were lengthy. On our departure day we had to wait for a second car when trying to go downstairs to check out, and that elevator a) filled up by floor 15 and b) stopped on nearly every floor below because the delays were having cascading effects as more & more people had to wait/skip full cars. It took us easily more than 10 minutes in a sardine-packed elevator to get from the lobby on 17 to the ground floor.
Midway through our stay, we returned late one evening to discover that both our card keys had stopped working for no reason. The cards were carried separately so accidental degaussing/wiping is not a plausible explanation.
The front desk was pretty active about inviting requests via text message, so one evening I asked them to send up a few wine glasses. The response was that I should call room service, and I did. The glasses arrived promptly … along with a charge slip for ~$25. (IIRC, that was a $15 delivery fee + 18% service fee, plus food(!) tax and some other BS junk fee.)
Maybe I’m naive in thinking this shouldn’t have cost more than a cash tip to the staff member. (Don’t think so, as I’ve had several hotels happily send up champagne flutes, an ice bucket, or similar items gratis over the years.) But even if you consider it reasonable for the hotel charge for such things, I don’t think it’s naive to expect someone to say, “Hey, FYI there’s a cost for this and it will be about $X” at some point prior to showing up at the door. The whole episode felt like a ripoff and left a very bad taste in my mouth.
Finally, Kellogg Boulevard in front of the hotel is currently undergoing a complete reconstruction, with work starting at 7am most days. The hotel obviously has little control over this, so I mention this as an FYI and not as a failing of the IC. I will say the pace of work was surprisingly brisk during my stay, so perhaps this will be done soon; check the hotel website if you’re traveling here any time soon.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
In short: no, would not return.
I burned 72K for a five-night stay. On its face that seems like a pretty good value, but I would not stay here again. I’m usually pretty forgiving—no hotel is perfect and mistakes do happen—but the cumulative issues wore me down. If it were just a matter of the tired room furnishings, I’d put up with that again to get the great views. But the staffing and staff-training issues, the surprise charge for glassware, and the really miserable elevator service add up to a thumbs down from me. IDK if the IC St. Paul Riverfront management is well-meaning & inept or just doesn’t care; either way, there are enough alternative options in downtown St. Paul that I wouldn’t subject myself to this a second time.

What was good and what was bad?
GOOD:
- The restaurant’s main menu items for breakfast were generous and well prepared, including steak and eggs. As a Diamond I took advantage of this on most days — but see below.
- I received 600 points as a welcome gift in addition to free Diamond breakfast.
- Greener Stay points (500) for skipping housekeeping posted promptly ~24 hours after each day of declined housekeeping.
- All staff, even the misinformed FDC from Day One discussed below, were polite and generally willing to assist with requests like changing a $20 bill.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
Club room, received Junior Suite with club access on high floor
How are the rooms?
Spacious suite with separate sitting area, comfy bed, bathroom with shower and bath, lovely view over the city. TV with large selection of channels. Large desk.
How is the exec. lounge?
Nice views over the city. Snacks and afternoon tea were somewhat basic, but evening canapes were somewhat more substantial. Local wines were of decent quality.
What was good and what was bad?
Good:
Status acknowledged, all staff were friendly and the restaurant served excellent food at breakfast and dinner.
Bad:
Nothing, I felt welcomed as a guest at all times and staff were great.

Happy to return, Ljubljana is a beautiful city and all hotel staff made me feel welcome. The room price was on a par with other hotels in this part of Europe.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive? We booked the cheapest entry level room and received a three category upgrade to a King Premium Sofa on the top floor.
How are the rooms? Lovely. Comfortable bed with long sofa next to the window. There was a desk but no chair so might have been awkward for a business traveller. 1.5L bottle of water on the coffee table. Generous complimentary mini bar including a couple of beers, a gin, a whisky, tonic and several sodas. No Nespresso machine but coffee filters and a large pack of Caravan coffee plus assorted tea bags and hot choc. A few snacks including Tunnocks wafers and lemon melts. No bath, only a shower. Amenities were Byredo. The bottles were a bit grubby, especially the shower gel. I am all for cutting down on single use plastic but the alternative needs to be hygienic.
How is the exec. lounge? This was great, open all day for coffee, cold drinks and snacks. Breakfast between 6.30 and 10.30 in the week and between 7 and 11 on the weekend. No supplements for the egg order menu. I chose smashed avo on sourdough with poached eggs and this arrived around 10 minutes later. Afternoon tea was between 2 and 4. This was cakes and scones, no sandwiches. Happy hour was from 5 to 8. Plenty of drinks choice. Fizz was Prosecco. The food was canap style. My son didnt fancy the canaps and the staff allowed him to order food from the Le Petit Beefbar. Some of the cost we offset with the 15 Ambassador credit. The staff were lovely, always greeting us by name.
What was good and what was bad? Good - We received a delightful Ambassador welcome gift with a handwritten card around an hour after we arrived. This was two 5cl bottles of craft gin and two bottles of tonic. The presentation was lovely. It came with assorted lemon and lime slices and juniper berries, but no ice or bottle opener. No matter, I am always prepared. I was once a girl guide and always have a bottle opener on my keyring. I used my Diamond amenity for a drink and snack in the bar. I had a pint of IPA and chose a starter from the Le Petit Beefbar menu. The bathrobes were beautifully soft and fluffy. My son tells me the gym was well supplied. I couldnt possible comment as I never stepped inside.
Bad - no bath, only a shower. Last time we stayed I was RA and we were given a suite with a roll top bath. I understand from the receptionist that there are some lower grade rooms with a bath. The large bottles of Byredo amenities were grubby. I dread to think of the germs that they harbour.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return? We had four days in Edinburgh for half term. IC was 230 a night which seemed good value for what we received. We moved to the Kimpton for our final night.

Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
2 Double Classic, received 2 Queen Premium High Floor (a two-category upgrade)
How are the rooms?
The upgrade meant we received a renovated room, so recently renovated in fact that it still had that new carpet smell! So the room was certainly good. No lake or CN Tower view but the view overlooking Union Station was beautiful in its own right.
How is the exec. lounge?
N/A, didn't have access.
What was good and what was bad?
The Good
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Used a combination of 90,000 reward points for one night and three nights on Ambassador BOGO rate which brought total cash outlay to CAD $1,200. Was pretty happy with this considering hotel prices in Toronto (well, Canada as a whole!) are pretty obscene at the moment and four nights on cash alone would have cost CAD $3,000. Would be happy to return.

The Good
- Location, right in the downtown core and close to lots of attractions including the lakefront, the CN Tower, St Lawrence Market, Union Station and more. Very easy to get around.
- Generally good service. Needed a suit pressed and although express service typically costs an extra 50%, they offered to do it at no additional charge which was very nice.
- Good check-in experience, 4pm Ambassador late check-out and choice of welcome amenity proactively offered. I had been emailing the same receptionist a few days earlier to ensure my consecutive bookings were linked and he remembered me.
- Convenient location for those arriving/departing from Billy Bishop Airport, with the downtown complimentary shuttle stop very close by.
- Complimentary mineral water was not always replenished by housekeeping, when I called to request it I was advised it was only provided on request. I would think if the bottles are gone when they come through each morning surely they could just replace them.
- Breakfast, which we chose as our welcome amenity, was mediocre. It runs from 7am-11am, which is a nice late finish but personally in a big city hotel I think it should start at 6am, the late start meant we had to forgo breakfast on our last day. Standard mix of hot food, bakery, cold cuts, cheese, fruit, yoghurt, cereal etc as well as omelettes made to order. Perhaps a bit controversial but I would have preferred they use something other than bright orange processed cheese for their omelettes! Juice and coffee was brought to the table by your server, personally I prefer having the juice at the buffet to serve yourself. The staff at breakfast were friendly enough but a bit stretched. Notably the Diamond amenity breakfast voucher explicitly states that gratuity is included and you are required to hand over the voucher at the start of the meal, I do wonder if this impacts on the service levels for guests using a voucher.
- Had dinner at the hotel to use our CAD $25 F&B credit, overall it was pretty good but one very big disappointment was the "smoked fries" which came with my ribs. Sounded good in theory but they were weirdly almost a cigarette/tobacco smoke which I didn't like at all. Everything else was good though, including the normal fries.

InterContinental Montreal
InterContinental Montreal
Which room did you book and which upgrade did you receive?
1 King Premium Montreal View Corner, received 1 Bedroom Suite Montreal View (room types are a bit confusing but this is a one-category upgrade)
How are the rooms?
So old that they could have been described as dated ten years ago! The only thing that was remotely new were the TVs, but to be fair things were still clean, comfortable and (mostly) in good condition. Was a bit surprised to find in the bathroom that they didn't have the brand standard Byredo amenities, there was one Byredo soap but the other items were a variety of completely random brands.
How is the exec. lounge?
Had access as I booked a Club InterContinental rate. Serves breakfast, evening drinks/canaps and all-day non-alcoholic refreshments, no afternoon tea from the looks of it. Evening service is from 5.30-7.30pm, everything was self-serve and they had a respectable array of food including hot pasta and chicken then a variety of cold items. For drinks they had a range of beers, wines and spirits including a French sparkling wine (not champagne though). Staff came through the lounge regularly to tidy up and kept everything clean and well stocked, they were also very friendly and chatty with guests. Seemed to be very popular - there was a large group staying at the hotel either pre-cruise or for some nautical themed conference and clearly going for a fancy dinner later, so everyone in the lounge was very much "dressed to the nines". For breakfast it wasn't super clear whether you could have the club breakfast in the restaurant or the lounge so I just went with the lounge, which was a good option. A variety of hot and cold items were available as well as sparkling wine to make your own mimosa. I was eating far too much good food in Montral so was quite happy to have a lighter breakfast in the lounge!
What was good and what was bad?
Lol, maybe we can start with the bad? Buckle in.
Value for $ or Priority Club Points? Would you return?
Paid CAD $488 for the one-night stay. Primarily chose the hotel to make use of the 4pm late check-out due to a late flight the next day and it served its purpose there just fine, however there were certainly lots of other small issues throughout the stay which on their own might be ok but added up to be very disappointing overall. Would only return if the hotel is comprehensively refurbished or I need to make use of the late check-out again. If you are looking for somewhere to say in Montral I can recommend Le Square Phillips Htel & Suites where I stayed for the prior three nights, certainly priced and marketed as a more moderate hotel but to be honest I enjoyed my stay there more than my stay at the IC!

- Arrived at midday and was advised the room wasn't ready. Fair enough, check-in time is 3pm but the receptionist was so confused at the request to store my bags. First she suggested I take them downstairs to the bell desk then she ended up taking them herself.
- Returned at 3.10pm, spoke to a new receptionist who searched the system for a good 5 minutes but still couldn't find a room. She went to speak with a supervisor (Perhaps to seek a further upgrade to an available room?) then came back and said they'd prioritise cleaning the room and offered in a way which suggested it was a special courtesy that she would let me sit in the Club lounge while I waited. I pointed out I had booked a Club IC rate so I was only being offered something I had paid for anyway and should have had access to by this point, it took her a minute to review the reservation and see I was correct. Didn't end up getting access to the room until 3.40pm.
- If I had to describe the shower, I would say it woke up and chose violence. There was one water pressure level and it was insanely strong, to the point where it took a while to adjust the showerhead to a level where it didn't hurt to stand under it and I had to turn it off regularly to let the water drain (I don't even think it was a blocked drain, it was just that strong!). I considered saying something but given it was a one-night stay, couldn't be bothered.
- I had planned to use my welcome drink vouchers at the hotel's Sarah B Absinthe Bar after returning from dinner. It was supposed to be last drinks at 11.30pm but when I arrived back at the hotel just after 11pm they had already closed.
- The Club lounge is in an odd location, in the lobby with no real views to speak of and random passers-by peeking through the glass to look inside. Hopefully a refurbishment is not far away and will bring a new location for the lounge.
- Both receptionists were trying to spin the fact I had been upgraded - as a guaranteed benefit of the Ambassador program a one-category upgrade is not particularly impressive. Tell me about it yes, but don't try to make it sound like I'm getting something I'm not entitled to as a way of trying to cover for problems.
- The aforementioned dated rooms.
- Excellent location in the heart of Vieux-Montral - really easy to get around and see the sights.
- Great panoramic views from my "Iconic Tourelle Suite".
- As a Diamond Ambassador amenity I was offered a choice of fruit, cheese, charcuterie or mixed platter along with still and sparkling water. I took the mixed platter with sparkling water and the platter along with a bottle of chilled San Pellegrino were delivered shortly after arriving in my room. Appreciated this as not many hotels I've visited have offered welcome gifts beyond the standard IHG welcome amenities.
- Sarah B Absinthe Bar has live jazz early on in the night on Friday nights, walked past and it sounded really good.
- To her credit, the second receptionist was extremely professional and trying her very best at service recovery, she was just hamstrung by the situation that management has created for all the frontline staff to manage, so merci to Maxence! To be honest I could say the same about most of the staff, it's not their fault they've been let down by a management team who have not invested in or properly managed their property. My recommendation as always is if you experience similar frustrations as I did don't be too harsh to the frontline staff, be kind and they will be on your side.
