I've used the new HND international terminal. It is nice. Very nice. Last monorail stop before heading into town and first stop coming in, so very convenient. Flew on the CX HND-HKG flights, which have pretty good timing.
Arrived 1:25 PM from HKG, was at the GHT in Roppongi by 3:15.... After stopping in Ginza for lunch and some shopping...

Just wondering if anybody has experience with the new international terminal? Info like: how are the restos? good shops? And, more importantly, how are the (Star Alliance) lounges? And, does it compare to the NRT NH lounge with the noodle bar?
I'll be using this terminal shortly...

I'd say theres a balance of budget, how comfortable you are with the subway and how much luggage you have.
Monorail to hamamatsucho then yamanote either around the long way or via kanda and the chuo line to shinjuku is the cheapest and likely fastest option. You are getting close to peak hour and if you're humping luggage and not used to Tokyo subways this could turn into a painful trip.
The easy but more expensive (not by much though, we're talking a difference of about 600 yen) would be to take the limousine bus from Haneda to Shinjuku. No hassle, give them luggage, hop on bus, turn up in shinjuku 45 - 60 minutes later.
If I had luggage I'd likely take the bus.

Actually from my little experience the metro is not all that bad, but JR is ......
BTW I hate it with passion on the monorail for a not that comfort ride .. small car packed with people....
if without luggage, I will take Keikyu line, change at Shinagawa for Tokaido Line (as most people should be getting off this station), and then change at Tokyo for Chuo Line to shinjuku. This is a bit detour but should be comfortable ride
If with luggage, forget about train and stick with bus. Hauling your luggage among tokyo working crowd is no fun.

But ... Is it really Shinjuku station you're aiming for? Or somewhere near Shinjuku station? (If you're headed for a hotel in the area, then you may have a direct bus option).

At that time in the morning, there will be no crowds until you reach Osaki on my "weird route" in -- monorail to Tennozu isle, then Rinkai line to Shinjuku. You'd be sitting down the whole way. But the walk at the connection is non-trivial (ignore the directional signs at the monorail station at Tennozu Isle and take the handicapped route) so maybe not with baggage.

Domo arigato! I've been on the road and tied up for a while, but now had another moment to read and to post. I have in deed booked at the Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu , and will plan on using the shuttle bus to access it (the hotel even has instructions on how to access after, iirc, 2200 hrs.)
(I hope the HND shuttles are somewhat similar to NRT with capability for baggage - we will be traveling with dive gear, and do not like to borrow / rent other peoples' trouble, or that JL will check bags through from SFO to HKG.)
I realize HND hasn't languished as an airport, but I rather meant as an intercontinental airport - much changed with the new runway and terminal. Sorry for the lack of clarity.
If I were going to schedule time to pop into town, I'd want to head to Kamakura to visit the great Daibutsu - it is there I met my wife in 1965, and where we visited again on our 40th anniversary; I'll wait 'til the 50th, if we get one.
Thanks again for the great help, jib71 and all.

One correction to your post - HND certainly didn't languish since NRT was opened. It grew and grew like the big ole turnip, until it was impossible to ignore.
Naturally, all the detailed information about the international terminal is available only in Japanese. Correction: English information is available on the airport Web site, if you click the banner for International Terminal:
http://www.haneda-airport.jp/en/
A free Terminal shuttle Bus connects the international terminal to the other terminals roughly every six minutes from 5.00am to midnight daily:
http://www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/e...s/portbus.html
For your hotel, you need to take that bus to T2
The Haneda Excel Hotel Tokyu is directly accessible from Terminal 2 departure lobby:
http://www.haneda-airport.jp/inter/access/portbus.html
I have taken the shuttle bus in the past (before the creation of the new international terminal). It was very straightforward and very quick. T2 is a good terminal for grazing and gazing. The new international terminal might be too - but I anticipate T2 will have the edge for a while.
I anticipate that many FT-ers will be asking "Can I visit Tokyo with my four hour layover". Fortunately, the international terminal has its own stations on the monorail and keikyu railways, which offer quite rapid connections to central Tokyo. This would make it quite feasible for someone in your position to choose a hotel at, say, Shinagawa Station ... if you wanted to.

Hotel Nikko Kawasaki ?
From Hotel Nikko Tokyo Limousine Bus takes 35 mins to the Haneda international terminal. According to the hotel website a taxi takes about 15 mins from the airport and costs approx. 4,400 yen.
Hotel JAL City Haneda has free shuttle to the airport but only hourly to the international terminal and it's an airport hotel in any case.
