Narita to Nagoya

I should remember this but can't seem to...

Need to get from Narita to Nagoya. Two questions:

1) Is the easiest way to get from Narita to Nagoya to take: NEX to Tokyo Station and then Shinkansen (Nozomi) to Nagoya?

2) Where does one go to purchase "walk up" tickets? It'll be very early on a Sunday morning (red-eye from HAN -> NRT).

Thanks!

Yes. Or NEX to Shinagawa Station and Nozomi to Nagoya. An easier transfer.

The ticket office in the basement of NRT should be open before the first NEX of the day (NEX2 at 07:31).

There's a 9.45am flight from NRT to NGO. It's unlikely to get you to central Nagoya any earlier than the train does, but it's another option... And while I'm at it, there are also direct flights from HAN to NGO.

Thanks both!

I'm giving consideration to changing my HAN->NRT flight to HAN->NGO. It's on VN and the times are almost identical.

But...

It's a flight segment in an already complicated award ticket from DL. Getting VN award flights in biz from DL is hard enough to begin with so I'm a little hesitant to mess with the ticket further. I'll be pushing it on the open-jaw/stopover limitations that DL imposes.

Yet I may try anyway.

Going to Shinagawa instead of Tokyo station will probably add a few minutes to your travel time. Beware that not all of the NEX stop at Shinagawa. The JR ticket counter is where you can buy both the Narita Express and the shinkansen ticket, and it's pretty easy to find. If you want a little more room on the shinkansen, specify that you want the green ca. It's about 4000 yen more (I think).

it's about 45 min. subway ride from NGO to Nagoya station. So yep, the shinkansen will get you to Nagoya station way faster .

Unlikely. The N'EX travels from Tokyo to Shinagawa in about 8 minutes. It takes 6 or 7 minutes via Shinkansen. The connection time from N'EX to Shinkansen is shorter at Shinagawa than at Tokyo.
There may be an edge case where you could choose to sprint off the N'EX at Tokyo Station and attempt to get onto a Nozomi train that will leave Shinagawa at about the time your N'EX is pulling into Shinagawa. Even for an olympic athlete with no luggage, that would be a "Hail Mary" sprint, though. Chances are you'd miss that train and get on the next one, which you could easily have caught at Shinagawa.

As far as I can see from the current timetable, all N'EX departures from NRT have cars that stop at Shinagawa. Did I miss something?

Every NEX train from NRT does stop at Shinagawa (according to the current timetable anyway). You will have to make sure you get a NEX ticket to Shinagawa, as the portion of the train which gets separated at Tokyo and goes to Shinjuku doesn't stop at Shinagawa.

P.S. jib71 has been quicker!

You're right, I just checked the timetable, and indeed all N'EX stop at Shinagawa. Last time I was there, I missed the N'EX at 9:45, and I didn't want to wait for the next one, so I took the KEISEI skyliner (...I think) !!! Sorry for the mistake ...

This is a transaction that is best to do at a ticket window rather than at a machine, btw, even though the shinkansen/limited express machine will guide you through in English. That's because, for an exotic reason I won't trouble you with, you will save a few hundred yen buying a ticket from Narita airport to Nagoya over buying two separate tickets.
