Access to the tuna auction is now restricted to the first 120 visitors that show up each day. They split the 120 people into two tour groups, with one touring 5:20-5:50, and the other 5:50 to 6:20. The slots are entirely first-come, first-serve and run out well before 5:30. I was there on Tuesday (of this week) and they ran out of spots at around 4:40 AM. I've heard that, during peak times, they sometimes are out by 4 AM.

I totally agree with doing this on your first day though ... if you're coming from the US, your body will want to be awake early in the morning anyway.

Sykes,
Thanks for the update as I wasn't aware of this limitation since I last went there.
I know the local authority was struggling to contain the number of people in those controlled temperature areas.
What about the rest of the market?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! We're starting to hone in on restaurants; made a reservation for Tempura Kondo for Monday and hotel is working on Sushi Sawada.

Concierge recommended Muromachi Sunaba or Kanda Matsuya for soba and Imaiya Marunouchi or Isehiro Koyobashi Honten for yakitori. Anyone have any opinions on these?

We have absolutely no idea where to eat in Kyoto still, but Tokyo is suddenly filling out very nicely.

EDIT: Dear god, I completely overlooked milepig's recs in Kyoto. Thank you, milepig.
