As I recall my own visit during Golden Week a few years ago, enough things (and all the sights) remained open so that I wasn't inconvenienced in any way.

The main thing is to stay away from airports and long-distance trains.

Just be aware that some ATMs may be closed and that even if you have a ticket for a train it may be so crowded that you might have to stand for a prolonged period of time, even on the shinkansen.

Welcome to FT and the Japan Forum. It is possible to search specific terms when you open a forum. You can find multiple references to Golden Week closures, schedule changes, etc. if you search the Japan Forum for the term "Golden Week".

This post might give you some comfort and there are certainly others.

As alluded to above, you should be aware that many transportation options will be booked up or very crowded. Likewise, if you do not already have hotel reservations locked in, you may have difficulty finding them for that time period. Many hotels will be fully booked well in advance, raise their room rates to much higher levels and/or require minimum stays. Best to plan well in advance.

1. Trains are very crowded. Remember to buy early in advance to avoid having to stand for the entire trip. The trains run at 130% capacity or higher during golden week due to the number of people standing.

2. Hotels are crowded in resort/vacation areas, but generaly tend to be available in urban centers such as Tokyo and Osaka as people travel away from these places to their familial homes during golden week. In fact, Tokyo during golden week can be veery quiet.

3. Most major shops/restaurants are open, but smaller family run stores tend to close.

Note that the timing of this year's Golden Week kinda "sucks" in the words of many in our office, as it's a Tuesday holiday (Apr 29) followed by a Mon/Tue holiday the following week (May 5/6). As a result it's definitely possible that there will be less impact than a "traditional" golden week where there are 3/5 days off in a single week, and that the impact will be more like a typical four-day weekend.

Is the 6th May actually a holiday this year?

I have good anecdotal evidence that it is, but a number of usually reliable sources (like japan-guide.com) claim it isn't:

Is the kenpo kinenbi holiday being observed on the 6th this year?

Yes, it will be according to this site which should be reliable
(Sorry I can only find it in Japanese.)

Kenpo kinenbi is Saturday, so the 6th is a replacement for Midori no hi which falls on Sunday.

Stock market is closed on the 6th, which I'm pretty sure means it's a holiday. I think it's more of a payback for Midori no Hi falling on Sunday than it is for Kenpo Kinenbi being on Saturday, as Saturday holidays don't tend to roll, but that's just speculation (Midori no Hi can't roll to Monday since that's already Children's Day).

Here's what our friends at the BOJ have to say about it, which supports my theory: http://www.boj.or.jp/en/type/list/holi/holi.htm

My colleague noticed a news story that the Japanese government was considering a 5 day holiday in September from 2009.

I need to investigate further - but I fear that we may be looking at a twice-a-year "Golden Week" in the future. Surely it would be better if the government just incented companies to give their employees more paid holidays without mandating the dates that the entire country will take leave.

The same government publicity site I referred to above http://www.gov-online.go.jp/useful/a.../200703/2.html talks about the possibility of 22nd September 2009 becoming Kokumin no kyujitsu, now that 4th May which used to be Kokumin no kyujitsu is Midori no hi.

The reason given as well as the tone of the announcement does not sound very convincing .

Ah, nothing like a "5-day holiday" that includes Saturday and Sunday...
