This thread is to discuss the historically annual premium class fare sales that occur for travel (mostly TATL) during the US Thanksgiving holiday period.

FAQ

Q: When is Thanksgiving? What travel dates are covered in the Thanksgiving Day sales?
A: Thanksgiving in the United States is observed on the 4th Thursday of November.

The week of Thanksgiving and the weekend after are considered to be the busiest period for US domestic air travel due to large numbers of people traveling to spend the holiday with loved ones. As a result business travel demand, especially for international business travel, is unusually weak. This drop in demand is believed to be the origin for the Thanksgiving holiday international business class fares.

Typically these fares are offered for travel outbound from the US in the period from the Sunday before to the day after Thanksgiving. Return travel is usually valid for the day after Thanksgiving to the following Wednesday.

Q: When do the Thanksgiving fare sales start?
A: Sometime in the summer with an average start date of Aug 4.
The first reports, by year, posted on the message boards of Thanksgiving holiday sales are as follows:

2015: Jul 25**
2014: Aug 9
2013: Jun 18
2012: Jul 11
2011: Aug 8
2010: Aug 18
2009: Aug 11
2008: Jul 2
2007: Sep 22

**In 2015, on Sep 30 OW initiated a very brief 2nd round of discounted fares. It only lasted about 18 hours.

Q: How good are the Thanksgiving sales? What are some typical prices?
A: Many times the Thanksgiving airfare deals are the lowest TATL premium class fares offered the entire calendar year.

The lowest prices reported to the board each year are as follows:

Note: All prices from here on out are all-in round-trip/return prices in J unless otherwise noted.

Airlines are gripped with insanity if they think anyone in their right mind would pay these prices to fly J over Thanksgiving.
If you look at the wiki on top of the thread, you will see that in years past, the best fares dropped as late as August 18th. So, going by the wiki, I would guess that if the fares don't drop by 8/18 then what we see today is probably the best it will get.

I know seat mappers don't tell the whole story, but they sure look wide open over the Thanksgiving week and you would think if folks are buying up these seats for leisure travel then seats would get picked right away.

Or maybe yield management decided to wait a little longer this year, instead of selling the cheapest seats 60-days out?

Possibly, but I think it was telling that SkyTeam temporarily lowered the fares by $200, but returned shortly thereafter to the original fares once the other alliances didn't follow suit.

Everyone is holding out until the pressure becomes unbearable and someone will blink.

In case the fares remain too high, does anyone have a good turkey recipe to share?

Also why are Thanksgiving fares always for Europe? I would love Tokyo for $1,500.

More airlines are charging for advanced seat selection.

Can't say I'm aware of a single airline that charges for advanced seat selection in J or F on a paid ticket, even a discounted one. Now, I'm not the worlds most informed traveler but...

My guess is that this week will see the airfare drop by a few hundred. I'm gonna say Tuesday

I mean, I realize there is a big diff in fare but still, you are paying thousands for a plane ticket which in my book should get you a pre-assigned seat. How long as BA been doing this for?
