Help with BOS-HKG with new AAdvantage 2017

With the announcement of the new AAdvantage rules starting 2017 I was wondering how I could now keep my PLT status with the $6K spend requirement. At least half of my miles come from personal travel vs biz.

I was considering BOS-HKG 1/1/17 returning 1/3/17 in J. Not cheap I know but the thought of doing this in Y is not good. I have done Y before to Asia (PVG and HK). Now that I'm older and have tasted J several times, I have less tolerance for Y.

I have never done anything like this. If I did it, I know any family/friends that found out would think I was nuts. (they don't understand us FT's) I have no idea about logistics. No Visa is required, correct? Any issues with HK customs when you tell them you're only there for 18 hrs?

AA has a flight from DFW that gets in 1/2 about 6:30pm. They have a return flight on 1/3 at 2:20 pm. Is there a hotel near the airport or would I have to venture into the city for what amounts to a few hours?

The J ticket would pretty much cover the spend requirement for the year. I would net ~38K EQM based on the 2x for J class.

I would appreciate any thoughts and guidance maybe from someone that has done this.

What is so special about PLT status? Why not fly the cheapest and fly upfront regardless?

Well I guess if you're EXP, nothing. But if you're nothing, PLT does have some benefit as you know. Based on my work travel, I have no hope (and little desire) to reach EXP. I do appreciate the few perks I get from PLT which admittedly it seems less and less over time.

You could try the Regal Airport Hotel at HKG, which I believe is linked to Terminal 1 via a walkway.

Looks like a little over 38.7k EQM. I see a $5971 fare on all AA-marketed flights thru DFW (most choices include CX-marketed, and we don't know yet what those will earn in terms of RDM or EQD); but remember that that includes taxes (~$100?) which won't count toward EQD.

It will be interesting to see what the experts think is a good CPM for a premium MR, under the new rules; I don't pretend to know.

As sambagrrl07, the Regal is the Airport Hotel. There's also a Marriott quite close by.

Under the new program rules the return on investment of a status or mileage run is much less clear or desirable. Maybe save your money and your time and just buy the benefits you need a la carte from any airline instead of focusing on just one.
