Judging from some other pages on United's site, the merge won't happen until at east EOY 2011...as they mention in a couple places that the flight miles/segments will be joined at the EOY for purposes of status...which means they will be separate until, at least, said time.

The "bait" will most likely be to link the accounts, not to merge them, just like with DL/NW. And just like then, the smart FTers did link them and then took advantage of the arbitrage opportunities between the two programs' earn/burn rates. Got a lot of CO miles but want a one way award? Good thing you are linked. Got an lot of UA miles and want to fly in Micronesia? Good thing they are linked. Flying on Copa? Good thing they are linked.
Name on reason not to link them. I've got none.

I'm betting that expiration dates come in to play but it hasn't been announced yet.
Yes, I was legitimately curious. And I'm still trying to figure out what caps you are speaking of that make it better to not link the accounts. Whatever CC-based caps are going to remain per program until one of the programs disappears. Having the accounts linked will not change that earning potential if history repeats itself (as I'd expect it will).

To both the above posts, in my experience, everytime mergers or buyouts are completed, including the FF programs, one ends up with two accounts in the succeeding program (unless one takes the bait to lead the succeeding program to merge the accounts) a condition devoutly to be wished for if one is willing to do the things necessary to maintain both accounts.

if I remember correctly, the DL/NW merger offered some bonus miles (a smalll 500 miles or something?) for having you do something such as link the accounts by a certain date. If you did nothing, they merged everything for you later on and you did not get that small bonus. I had many family to do this for and forgot 2 of them.
With CO/UA, I have heard rumblings that we all may have a bit more time to both open at least one more new CO checking acct and get one more of each airline's CCs.
I could be mistaken on all of this.

Shamelessly bumping this thread as I'm starting to try and figure out how I'm going to navigate the CO/UA Merger.
I've noticed that Rewards flights on united to Europe can cost upwards of 100,000 UA points for roundtrip coach, whereas CO often offers 120,000 round-trip business first "Super-Saver" fares.
I doubt anyone has any idea, but what's the current thinking on the post-merger rewards flights? Will I still be able to get ~120,000 mile business class tickets like I've done on CO for ages?
