Merge of Continental and United Mileage Accounts
So.. in the next few days will continental one pass account and United Mileage Plus Account merge?
so If I apply for United Visa with 50,000 bonus miles and Continental One Pass checking with 25000 miles.. am I looking at a free 75000 miles in my account?
is it really possibe?
P.S: Not sure if this is being discussed anywhere I couldnt find it in the top threads so posted it. Also, I hope this is the correct section to discuss this.. if not, mods please move appropriately! Thanks!

from a United email I received:
What's Next?
Although announced today, the merger is subject to the approval of United and Continental shareholders, as well as regulatory clearance and certain other closing conditions. We are committed to obtaining the necessary approvals and clearances in a timely manner and hope to close the merger by the end of the year.

Also note that the target date - by the end of the year - is their goal to complete the merger, i.e. the corporate merger. Combining of the FF programs is likely to take even longer. If the Delta acquisition of Northwest is any guide, the program merge probably won't be complete until mid 2011 or later.
I'm planning on signing up for a Continental credit card to add those miles to my United MP account after the programs are combined.

Later and when they tell us how.
The details have not yet been announced but they have intimated that it will be quite similar to the DL/NW approach where the accounts can be linked and then later they'll be fully merged when the dying program actually dies.

i wasn't affected by dl-nw merger....but the panam-dl went like this....
our panam accts were converted to dl w/ a 5k mi welcome bonus.....then later, they were merged into our dl accts & the bonus was taken away....i expect something similar w/ our co non expiring mis becoming ua mi's the could expire...it will take a while....every one should keep documentation of balances...good luck...

In my experience with earlier mergers, if the information in the two accounts' profiles is close enough that the computers could determine that they belong to the same person, the miles in the account to be closed are added to the surviving account automatically.
If the profiles differ enough that this isn't possible, they open a new account in the surviving program to repace the account to be closed. They then tell you (using contact information from the account that was closed) that they did, and what you should do to merge this new account with a surviving one if you had one but their computer missed it.
So, before they merge the programs, make sure your profile information is up to date and that the two are close enough for automated matching to work. I don't know exactly what matching algorithms have been used, and there's no guarantee that UA/CO programmers will pick one of those anyhow, but I'd suggest using the same address variation, the same e-mail address and the same phone number in both.

If it's to your advantage, say, to reach a threshold that matters a lot to you (a freebie, 1MM etc.), combine accounts. Otherwise don't do it. No matter what the bait. Think like a FTer... @:-)
