Look at the hotels in the countries you want to visit while you have your status and let that color your decision.
I like Hyatt as much as anyone, but for my recent trip to Belgium i would have had exactly zero Hyatt properties to choose from in the whole country.
And Hilton status lasts until March of the second following year (2013 in your case).
In case you aren't aware, if you can (could have?) paid for your Hilton stays with the Amex Surpass card, you would have racked up a LOT of extra points.
