I think it perhaps has always been there as a default setting!

doc, thanks for the link...
i remember coming across that original thread, but i still had not seen the "moderators" column header before
many schools of thought on whether moderators would be good or bad, but at least it would (probably) reduce the clutter on these boards and the constant repetition of the same comments and themes by some posters.
it would be a nice timesaver from that perspective, but i could see how choosing a moderator would be very difficult. perhaps, "the buzz" should be moderated by a flyertalk staff member so that the topic is always on FF miles and programs... on the other hand, i am guilty of posting an off-topic on this particular board as well, but i do so only in following randy's example regarding doc's recent "milestone"

The moderator thing has been there since I joined at least. If you click on "delete topic" button right under this comment to right of "administrative options" it says only moderators can do that, of which there are none, other than Randy's staff. Who have apparently only deleted a couple of threads total over the years.

That moderator thing is part of the software package. Other bulletin boards use the same software and you set it up for your site. They have the capability to monitor all posts and delete or move any of them. I'd say they have taken a low profile on the issue.

I think the end to this discussion is:
Ultimate Bulletin Board has a switch in the software to 'hide' the moderator column. Sometimes after an upgrade the switch is reset...which means there may have been times with and without a moderator column...but am unsure if this is the case with FT.
