PIT/HNL on mileage- any airline where stopover allowed on mainland?
Sorry if this is the wrong BB to post on, I just wasn't sure what would be the correct one.
On an award ticket, are there are any airlines that allow a mainland stopover?
We'll be travelling PIT/HNL and can do it with AA, US, or NW miles.

I have done stopovers on Hawaii awards on both AA and UA. Not sure where you intend to go though: AFAIK the stopover has to be along a valid routing to Hawaii.
The good news is that both of those airlines have quite a few valid routings to Hawaii. They fly from their mini-hubs on the West Coast to Hawaii, and they fly to both HNL and other islands. If you have some date flexibility, you can pick from a lot of interesting stopover options.
I have no working knowledge of NW/CO.

From personal experience (circa December 2003), I can verify that AA allows a mainland stopover on a Hawaii award (mine was at SJC). Don't know about the other airlines.

Rico, NW does allow a stopover using CO and/or DL and/or NW operated flights.
Where do you want to do the stopover?? That will largely dictate which airline and routing you select.

Thanks folks!
I'll probably be able to work something out then. I'm taking my mother (82) and a friend of hers, along with a friend of mine.
This would be more a trip for her than anything else. I was hoping for the stopover to break up her trip somewhat. She's never been further west than LA in the south, so many opportunities come to mind- ORD, LAX, DFW, or even LAS (via LAX). I guess its all in the availability now.
BTW, on Hawaiian award travel, is a mainland stopover AND an island open-jaw allowed?
Thanks again
Mike

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">* Stopovers not permitted. Award levels based on redemption from a single account. U.S. citizens traveling to an international destination must present return ticket at time of check-in. </font>
Sorry, no stopovers are permitted on HA.

AAwards allow "one stopover + one open-jaw," & the 'stopover' can be any AA city in the 48 USA, no matter how out of the way.
From ORD the nonstops to HNL & Maui (OGG) leaveat 9am or 11am depending on day. If you stopover on the way to Hawaii, you don't have to leave PIT early in the mornig to connect.

Are you sure? AA wouldn't let me do a stopover in Champaign because it wasn't a valid routing. Connection to CMI vs. drive from ORD wasn't much of a time difference so I didn't argue the point, but I specifically recall at least that particular agent not allowing a "wierd" stopover.
Edited to add: the award in question was a 35K PlanAAhead coach award. End cities were Kansas City and Kona.

pinniped: This is an often understood rule by the AA reservations staff. I can verify that the stopover city can be anywhere. Arranged an award SJC-BOS-SFO-HNL-SJC.

Is it just with Hawaii and int'l awards, or can you set up a domestic triangle trip with one 25k award?

Great - I will keep that in mind for next time. If I had wanted to go somewhere more charming and exotic than Illinois, I probably would have pressed the issue more and had them dig up the exact rules.

Last year for example
Ticket1:
DFW-SEA(trip1)-DFW(stopover home)-BOS (trip2) for 40K FC
Ticket2:
BOS-DFW(stopover home)-HNL(trip3)-DFW for 60K FC
<edited> seems the ElCheapo method does even better by getting 2 trips/1 award by having an open jaw at home, which may not work as well for some depending on city. I assume SJC/SFO aren't considered 'same city' like JFK/LGA/EWR where this presumably wouldn't work because it wouldn't actually be an open jaw?

stopover is allowed on delta aswell.
It all depends on the agent whome you book your award tickets with. very recently I flew on a BOS - OGG - SFO (Stopover) - BOS route.
my ticketing was as follows:
BOS-LAX-OGG
Since she could not get me from LAX to SFO direct, she had to ticket me from LAX to Salt Lake City to SFO and finally from SFO to BOS
