Garuda - LHR-DPS direct

Seems like Garuda cannot leave their LHR service alone for long; having reintroduced 3 days a week direct to Jakarta in mid December, 2 months after dumping the whole service - now it will go 2 days a week direct to DPS Bali - though not back the same route as far as I can see.

We were booked in J for LHR - CGK - DPS for next October. Got a schedule change notification this morning - nice that we now go direct to Bali - but kind of typical of Garuda that the new itinerary shows us going LHR - DPS, overnight DPS, then DPS - GGK and back to back CGK - DPS !!! Still, shouldnt look a gift horse in the mouth I suppose - a gentle phone call later in the day I guess will sort it out. Return trip is still via CGK.

A search at the GA website seems to give GA86 staying the same to depart CGK 12:05 and arrive LHR 20:00 on Tue, Thu and Sat. But GA87 to be depart LHR 21:55 and arrive DPS 21:15+1 on Tue and Thu and arrive 21:30+1 on Sat. Direct LHR-DPS will be handy for those who are on holiday in Bali (and nearby) or onwards to MEL/SYD/(PER?), which judging from my last GA87 flight was mostly Bali holidaymakers.

Looks like I'll be shifting my LHR to SE Asia flights from GA via CGK to VN via HAN/SGN as to fly with GA and back track from DPS is a bit too far. CGK was handy for me to SIN as there are so many GA CGK-SIN flights per day.

Give it 48 hours for everything to settle down - all flights are showing cancelled!. The flight changes start 22nd January. I believe it's all 3 flights - although impossible to check as not loaded yet (I also have the joys of LHR-CGK-DPS-CGK-DPS as it's all been automatically rebooked).

Timings for flights are:
GA 87 LHR DPS 21:55 21:30

Return flights look identical as have to fly LHR-DPS-CGK-LHR due not possible DPS-LHR non-stop.

Timings suck.Only connections are what - CGK? Even flying 2 hours earlier out of LHR would open up MEL / SYD and lots more domestically. Still that change is possible..

This whole episode really reflects poorly on GA on how to really mess up what should be a flagship and premium route for them.

The difficulty really stems from the timing of their slots at Heathrow - until they can improve upon the slot timings or get decent connections at DPS onto Australia and NZ the route will probably continue to struggle. The one bonus of moving away from CGK is that they get away from the runway weight restrictions that have prevented GA from operating the 773 with a full payload.

Lots more discussion and debate in this thread
