Just hoping for some clarification. I'm about to try to book a mileage round the world ticket with SkyTeam using Korean Air miles.
My summer plans are to travel the following route:

Seoul-Tel Aviv-Berlin-New York-St Thomas-Spokane-Honolulu-Seoul.

If I understand the award rules correctly, I can't make the 4 stops in the US, as it only permits 3 in any region. Is this correct? It wouldn't be too much of a hassle to buy a separate round trip ticket NYC-STT and cut out the St Thomas stop on the route, but I'd prefer not to have to buy that ticket if I don't have to. So a) am I correct in that I can't stop that many times in North America, and b) if I cut out the St. Thomas stop, would the routing then be fine for the award booking?

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
1) Caution: Korean air has blackout days in summer for awards:

Blackout dates for 2011:
Within Korea: 1-2 Jan, 1-7 Feb, 26 Feb-1 Mar, 5-10 May, 4-6 Jun, 16 Jul-28Aug, 10-14 Sep, 1-3 Oct, 30-31 Dec
International flights (excl. USA/Canada): 1-9 Jan, 1-7 Feb, 16 Jul-15 Aug, 10-14 Sep, 24-31 Dec
USA/Canada flights: 1-9 Jan, 1-7 Feb, 20 May-3 Jul, 16 Jul-15 Aug, 10-14 Sep, 9-31 Dec

2) These rules are for paid tickets, and I don't know if specific rules applied for KE award RTW: better to ask to KE desk.

3)No mention about 3 stopovers in USA

NOT MORE THAN 5 STOPOVERS PERMITED WITHIN
CONTINENTAL USA / CANADA

and
THE FOLLOWING POINTS/AIRPORTS SHALL BE CONSIDERED
AS ONE CITY --
- NYC/JFK/LGA/EWR
- BWI/WAS/IAD/DCA
- FLL/MIA/PBI
- LAX/ONT/SNA/BUR
- SFO/OAK/SJC

4)You are not obliged to fly on KE, perhaps only one flight and I am not sure about that (it could avoid blackout days) but you have to deal with KE for your journey, as it is with their miles

Tell us if it is useful with KE, because with AF in France it is only by fax and it's a shame...

Ok, scratch the award plan. Turns out the routes in and out of JFK are pretty much gone for the dates that I need. Should have booked earlier. But because some of the destinations are places I've already made plans to be at this summer, I will be buying a round the world ticket instead. As has been noted here, finding good information on the SkyTeam RTW fares is cumbersome and some of you seem to have it at your fingertips.

Could someone tell me the basic( <30k miles, not sure I can make it under 26, but certainly under 29) fares for SkyTeam travelling out of Seoul-Incheon airport(ICN)?

The folks at the KE office were very helpful, woman there was trying all sorts of reroutings to see if she could find available award seats that would get me to NYC, if all in vain. They didn't really know RTW details, were only vaguely aware that SkyTeam had such a ticket for purchase, and couldn't give me any fare information. And the KE legs of the trip went without a hitch, it was the Delta side that was the problem. Doesn't fully answer how useful they were, but they did make every effort to help.

Appreciate your advise ...

Is this legal?

hkg-icn(x)-fra-cdg(x)-jnb-cdg-lax-icn(x)-bom-icn-hkg

This is about 37,500 miles either in KE or AF First Class ... an idea how I can max this to 39000?

Thanks.

I hope I posted this in the right place.

So I am sure you have heard this question a bunch and sorry for being repetitive. I did try to read around before asking.

I want do a "circle the pacific" but I am not sure what would be the cheapest, most cost efficient manner since I want to visit a multitude of countries. Idealistically I would like something that would allow to have flexible dates. Basic tentative itinerary.

LAX > Toyko
Toyko > Osaka (Via rail)
Osaka > Seoul
Seoul > Shanghai
Shanghai > Hong Kong
Hong Kong > Manila (PH)
Manila (PH)> Ho Chi Minh City
Ho Chi Minh City > Bangkok
Bangkok > Singapore
Singapore > Bali
Bali > Cairns (AZ)
Cairns (AZ) > Bisbane *(Via bus)
Bisbane > Sydney *(Via bus)
Sydney > Melbourne *(Via bus)
Melbourne > Auckland
Auckland to LAX

Is it crazy to expect something like this to cost around $4k-$5k?

What should I be looking at spending?

I do not have to fly everywhere and would actually prefer talking rail/bus if I could. Where is a good place to start?

My only goal is be in New Zealand by mid-October for the World Cup of Rugby.

Thanks!

Bus? Check distances. Where you might want to rent a car and be able to stop at you leisure, some of those city pairs are best traveled by air not bus.

One option would be to:

1. Buy LAX-NRT return on DL

2. In conjunction with that ticket, buy a SkyTeam Asia Pass (http://www.skyteam.com/about/products/asia.html) with three coupons which you would use for Osaka-Seoul on Korean Air, Seoul-Shanghai on Korean, and then Singapore-Tokyo on DL (work with me here, although you'd have to check that is permitted under the Pass rules).

3. The rest of your flights are suited to the LCCs which fly around the region:
- Shanghai - Hong Kong - Hong Kong Airlines
- Hong Kong - Manila - Hong Kong Airlines or Cebu Pacific
- Manila - Ho Chi Minh - Cebu Pacific
- Ho Chi Minh - Bangkok - Air Asia
- Bangkok - Singapore - Air Asia, Jetstar or Tiger Airways
- Singapore - Denpasar - Air Asia, Jetstar or Tiger Airways
- Denpasar - Cairns - Jetstar
- Melbourne - Auckland - Jetstar
- Auckland - Singapore - Jetstar (and from here you'd pick up your last coupon on the Asia Pass to get you back to Tokyo for the return leg to LAX).

I don't know what the total cost would be, but most of the intra-Asia legs on the LCCs you can pick up for as little as USD $50 if you're booking now for travel much later in the year. You can probably get the total cost of your trip below $4,000.

Okay, I will look into it. I was just under the impression it would be cheaper to travel by bus and I would get to see more of the country. Thanks for the input

This is wonderful and very helpful!

Do you think since the LLC's (Which i still don't know what that means, I am guessing it means company) are cheaper to fly on, it would be a better utilization to use those for the shorter flights and use the asia pass for the longer flights?

Also, what does DL mean?

And do you know if the LCC tickets have flexible dates?

/edit: I Don't really need truly flexible dates, but I don't know how long I will be staying where and I am worried about being constrained and if I shift one flight, it will change all the other ones as well.

I just found a ticket from LAX - NRT for $715 USD
and one from AUK - LAX for $850 USD for the dates I wanted, so I think I am just going to buy them and just wing the stuff in the middle. Buy the asia pass and use it when I need to.

Sorry, using airline terminology:

LCC = Low Cost Carrier
DL = IATA airline code for Delta Air Lines

The Asia Pass only works if you buy a round-trip ticket. Given your return is presumably on Qantas or Air New Zealand I don't think you're eligible to buy that Pass.

You can find flexible fares on the LCCs, but you'll pay more to do so. For example, Jetstar for travel this Friday from Singapore to Bali, their cheapest fare (non-changeable, only carry on luggage) is SGD $121, the fully flexible fare with checked luggage is SGD $271.

You have a while before you travel and you should probably look around the various airlines' sites to see what they offer. Many of the sectors you want to travel may have cheap fares days before travel, particularly if they have flights at times which are not peak business travel (e.g. late at night, very early in the morning). If you're prepared to be flexible and keep checking the airline sites while you're travelling to see when good fares come up, that might be better than locking yourself into dates now.

Don't also rule out looking at travel consolidator sites (like www.kayak.com or www.zuji.com.sg), often you can find good last minute fares on legacy airlines. For example, KLM and Qatar Airways both fly Singapore - Denpasar, as add-ons to their respective Amsterdam - Singapore and Doha - Singapore flights, and you may be able to find good fares on them. I'm seeing SGD $308 for the Qatar flight tomorrow on Zuji.

I travelled by bus along a good deal of your proposed route in Australia. You can buy bus passes (either on standard services, like Greyhound, or on services geared more towards backpackers, such as Oz Experience) that let you take your time travelling the route (you usually just have to ring up the day before you want to travel onwards to let them know which service you intend to re-join). It's about 12 hours (or more in a bus) from Brisbane to Sydney, and the same again from Sydney to Melbourne; Cairns to Brisbane is much longer and would take about a day of non-stop driving.
