What's the history behind the "WN" designation for Southwest?

How did Southwest become "WN"?

I looked at their history, and I couldn't find any name that they had, or airline that they acquired that could have the initials or abbreviation "WN". I tried to search here on FT, thinking it must have been covered before, but have been unable to find it. (It's a difficult search because there are a lot of matches for "Southwest" and "WN")

I realize this doesn't answer your question, but here are some theories from previous FT threads that I found after your question perked my interest:

Although, I'm not sure if B747-437B is being serious in the second post of the second thread--I could certainly see Southwest doing something like that

Best explanation I've seen is that SW was taken (Air Namibia, from the old name Suid-Wes Lugdiens [South-West Airservice]), so they just took one with a W with it, and WN was available.

Our original two-letter code (late 1970s) was "OE", and the best I can recollect from others that have retired, "WN" was the only thing with a "W" in it that sounded remotely like "Southwest" or even "Western" since SW and other obvious choices were already taken.

Personally, I never heard the "We're Nuts" theory espoused -before- the Nuts! book came out, but scads of times after it came out. I kind of doubt the book and the WN had any connection between them.

I like the theory that it is the mirror image (opposite?) of NW...

or Welcome Neighbor, Wild Nights and White Nylons, Weather's Nice...

or perhaps in light of the more current environment:

We Now can Willfully Neglect some loyal followers as they are Woefully Naive and Won't Notice the realization of their Worst Nightmare when their TTF's and drink coupons are soon Worth Nothing.

Willie Nelson's from Texas. Hey, it's as plausible as some of the others that have been proposed...
