Incident at a hotel

Ok first off I would like to say that I won't name the hotel only because the hotel has really looked out for me recently and I think this is a one off incident (I actually think all cases are a one off). I'm posting this just to know what would people do if they were in my position.

What happened was that I was in the middle of my stay and went out with my wife, after coming back my wife found a bloody tampon in the toilet. I'm just certain that the housekeeping lady was at fault here, because we left for about 4 hours and asked her to clean the room while we were leaving.

Spoke with the front desk manager and he offered points for the incident where he said "you can get a night at another hotel". The hotel is a Cat. 2 and the incident was on a weekday so that makes it 4K points, I got 3K points. Should I make a fuss that I didn't get the extra 1K points? Is the 3K points actually good enough for an incident like this?

Incident at a hotel

From a monetary perspective 3k points are worth about $80 or so.

Such a discovery would definitely freak me out momentarily. My personal opinion is that 3k points are reasonable, but only you can determine what makes you feel whole.

To give a relative comparison, I was at an unnamed Cat. 4, was booked into a 2 queen club (all out of kings), and 1 bed was damp under the comforter. So it's not like water was spilled on the bed. I have no idea what was there. It was like 2 AM before I got in bed, had a few brew-skis, and just got in the other queen bed and slept. I mentioned to the front desk upon checkout the next AM in such a way as "It wasn't me, I have no idea why, but it's pretty gross that the mattress is soaking wet, but the comforter is dry. You should probably have someone look at that." The checkout agent promptly gave me 5K SPG. So is your issue better or worse than mine? That's for you to decide.

If I were the hotel, I would have paid you $1000 and made you sign some sort of agreement barring you from ever disclosing this or distributing any pictures of the incident. Even though it appears you arent calling them out, if you did and posted pictures say here and on tripadvisor, you could probably have a fairly significant impact on their business.

If you really believe that the housekeeper did this out of spite, I'd want the hotel to take management action. If a housekeeper is willing to this because you asked her to clean the room, imagine what else she might be willing to do to a guest's room or belongings.

A real hotel would comp the night and move the guest.

It really doesn't sound as if the housekeeper did it out of spite because she was asked to clean the room - sounds like she was in a hurry and forgot to flush. Certainly not acceptable and I would be horrified, nauseated, and disgusted (and whatever other adjective you'd like to add), if it happened to me. The OP only mentioned asking the housekeeper to clean as a way of saying that he's fairly certain it was her, because she was the only one he was aware of that had access to the room during that time they were out.

Personally, I would probably want at least the full 4k promised, if not more.

That was exactly what happened.

I'll have my ambassador handle this.

I guess it's harder to gross me out. I'd consider the 3K compensation good enough and put the incident in the rear view mirror.

The cleaning lady may have flushed but simply didn't do one last check to make sure that the tampon was disposed of. That's not uncommon with low flow toilets. I seriously doubt it was done out of malice.

Your speaking as if it's normal for her to use the toilet, Housekeeping should not use the guest's toilet.

Yes, and considering that she did not notice the offending item, it seems like she had used it after she cleaned it.

Housekeeping also should not wash out your drinking glasses with a dirty rag. But it happens all of the time.

You are also making an assumption that this was not something she needed to do urgently, which is something that none of us know the full circumstances about.

Not condoning that she did it and certainly not the mistake of not clearing up afterwards, but there may well have been a need for her to do so urgently.

As for the compensation on a room, I would expect a hotel to compensate me the standard rate for the category if they made an offer like the one you were made. i.e. 3k rather than 4k reflecting a time of week upgrade.

Personally I would be seeking a genuine apology and for the hotel to have taken it seriously. Compensation is something appreciated, but certainly not expected from my perspective, I may be in a minority here with that view.

No, it's not the norm for Housekeeping to use the toilets in the guestrooms, but it may have been an emergency for her.

This was an over-site on the housekeeper's part and Starwood can well afford to give the OP at least the full 4k compensation he was promised, even though it was not done on purpose and it may have been an emergency for her.
