consecutive nights from the same hotel count for only one stay?

I was thinking if I stay in a hotel for 3 nights. If I book three days separately, would that count as 3 stays or just one stay?

Officially, it would be considered one stay of three nights in length; however, it all depends upon how the hotel posts it and many here will be glad to confirm that Your Mileage May Vary (YMMV).

Almost always counts as one stay. One way people accomplish this with a little more work (or a lot more work if you aren't staying in a major city with multiple SPG properties in close proximity) is to hop between two SPG hotels.

Good grief man, this is hotel loyalty programs 101.

- If an SPG Member checks-out and then checks-back in to the same SPG Participating Hotel on the same day, it will count as a single stay for purposes of calculating Eligible Stays.

Yes, many think that, but most get proven wrong and then complain when it happens. There are many threads about ways to get around this. From changing properties every night to changing registered member each night. Some properties do mess up, but you then risk it getting caught later when it might be too late to do anything about it. Are you feeling lucky???

It's much better now with more properties to choose from and the rules once read "per geography" and not "per property". So two consecutive nights in the same city still counted as one stay.

Maybe SPG 101, but are all programs necessarily the same in this respect? I know I couldn't guarantee that because I'm not familiar with every program, and the OP could be in the same boat.

Any program that has a different threshold for stays and nights will not design it so that contiguous nights counts as more than one stay.

Otherwise, there would be no point to having separate thresholds.

99.99% of the time Im a 1 nighter in any 1 particular city anyway. But I would think if I made a res for Hotel AAA and checked out say at 10am and make another res at say 4pm for that night (2 nights in a row) theres a better chance that it will fly right by them, since they have already closed out my acct from night #1 before res #2 was made. Many folks make all the reses before even getting there, so the computer will pick up on that.

Main Con is the rate, by waiting till after you checkout you are rolling the dice that 1 the hotel will still have availability and that the rate wont be thru the roof

I have never done this nor do I have any plans to try it out, I prefer to play it safe and hotel hop if need be night to night if I happen to need to be in the same town more then 1 night. Since I also need to maintain staus with another program (or 2) Id simply do say SPG nights 1 & 3 and X night #2

While that's logical, we all know what happens when you assume...

On the positive side, I tend to get multiple welcome amenities when staying on back-to-back reservations.

I've always been under the impression that the SPG points/nights system(s) pick this up centrally regardless of how the hotel enters the info.

Well all I can say is reread post #2 by William , even he is saying at times its a YMMV issue, depending on how the Hotel handles it

Keep in mind I did say I never tried to do what I posted, just that if I was going to try and do it I wouldnt have more then 1 res at any 1 time. But it does seem some folks probably even had more then 1 at a time and still slipped under the radar

Bout the only time Id try it is late Dec and I was short the min Stay credit for status. However I usually requalify way before late Dec = no need till now to try it out and see if it would work

Yes, it is a function of the property to initiate the proper posting. If they don't catch the back-to-back reservations it may post as separate stays. However, if SPG ever has a reason to audit the account, it can get corrected then. And if they should do that in December or January, let's say, trying to recover from the downward adjustment may not be possible and the loss of status if you just squeaked by.
