Welcome, stoccato. Cheap Elite did a great job on how to find existing reports. I've moved your request into the master thread for Puerto Vallarta. Hopefully you'll get some responses, as I see there have not been many updates in the last couple years. And with your request here, that info will be captured for the next person who asks.

I've never stayed at the Sheraton, but I stayed a few nights at the Westin last May and I thought it was pretty nice. The rooms were a decent size, and it looked like all of them had at least a partial ocean view. There were a few large pools which had plenty of chairs around them. The beach was OK, but a lot smaller than it looks from the website. It was swimable, but otherwise a let down. If you enjoy sitting on the beach, I would highly reccommend renting a cabana due to the small size of the beach. And you have to order guacamole, it was excellent. We still talk about how great it was.

We had breakfast, dinner and room service at the hotel and enjoyed it. Nothing really wowed us, but it was all pretty good. Prices were pretty high, but not outrageous.

Also, it's mentioned in the master thread, but there is an OXXO (similar to a 7-eleven) right across the street from the Westin so we saved a lot of money by purchasing alcohol and snack items for our room from there.

 

I've stayed at both properties and definitely enjoy the Westin more. It's a short 8 minute walk to the marina that has more than a dozen nice restaurants. I would estimate a $6 ride via taxi to downtown shopping and more restaurants. The bus is also available and is cheap.
