Verizon question re: *228 (roaming list)

I've always read that you should only update the roaming list on your cellphone from your home area. I don't know about other carriers, but with Verizon it is *228 "send" then Option 2. In the old days this was important because the carriers weren't truly nationwide. A co-worker recently said that he always did the "update" function when he traveled to a new area of the U.S., and that this gave him better coverage, then he would update again when he returned to his home area.

Has anyone heard of this, and more important, has anyone done this with any success?

I'm pretty sure that this is not correct. There is only one PRL (preferred roaming list) and it's a nationwide list. Like you said, maybe in the old days things were different.

Essentially, the PRL (Preferred Roaming List) contains a list of permitted roaming partners (Perferred Systems) and forbidden systems (Negative Systems) which a CDMA (the type of mobile technology that VZW and Sprint employ) handset uses to determine where it can obtain service from.

By dialing *228 (in the case of VZW), the phone downloads a new (if available) PRL which would add/subtract roaming partners in one area or multiple areas as determined by the provider. It should be pointed out that the PRL is generally national with some rare exceptions.

Hope that helps,
Dan

Thanks for the explanation. I get good coverage with Verizon 99% of the time, but wanted to check the validity of the co-worker's statement I mentioned.

I can confirm from personal experience that you can update your Verizon PRL from anywhere within their network. It will not work if you are off-net.

One other point, if your phone is EVDO capable, updating your PRL could be beneficial as ALLTEL is currently rolling out EVDO and supposedly VZW is adding their EVDO SIDs to their Perferred Systems. Which would expand your EVDO capabilities into ALLTEL roaming areas which were 1XRT before hand.
