So do I. Every time I hear "I lost my luggage with Passport and stuff" I can not understand how someone can be so careless. I guess everyone at FT is aware of the problems you can get when you are somewhere far away from your home country without your Passport and other paperwork.
Isn't that common sense?

I also find it interesting how some people have such extreme paranoia about getting wronged by a complete stranger in a developed country. Translates into an inherent distrust of humanity itself, imo.
Keeping your belongings in a safe place? Very good practice. Being on constant high alert because you think your flight is filled with thieves, petty criminals and sexual predators and that one of them will come and rob you of everything you own while you sleep? Why even sleep if you're going to be like that? Heck, why fly at all? What if the pilots are out to get you too?

There is a VERY IMPORTANT reason why handluggage should ALWAYS be kept over the passenger in question!!!!Coming back from Beijing last year the gentleman boarded as one of the last so his overhead was already full and the flight being late the FA were husseling to get the show off the ground so one FA took it upon herself to stow this gentlemans luggage - somewhere.
The only probelm was his meds were in there and he didn't have time to place them in his seat back pocket because the FA wanted the flight secured. Well we were late anyway and I assume he had, had a strenous trip to the gate so just after take off he developed a medical problem and required his meds immeadiately . THIS was now a problem since the FA forgot where she had put the bag and the poor fellow had no idea where his bag and his meds were.
End of story was - we reurned to Beijing with a medical emergancy and FA looking for the bag.....
TAM also has this thing about loading Toiletpaper into the overhead compartments blooking space for 5 rows of passengers!!!!

I find it interesting how people think flying is anymore safe than being on the streets. Would you leave your bag/valuables unattended on the street? Then why would you leave your belongings unattended in the airport lounge or terminal.
I always keep my cash, credit cards and passport/ID on my person but one of my coworkers thinks its safe to leave it in his laptop bag and he's one to fall asleep the whole flight. He says his 'safety' is checking to make sure everything is still there before landing but do you really think the airline will stop and strip search every passenger for him in case his wallet goes missing?

What are you supposed to do? Sleep on a long-haul while sitting on your wallet or wearing your jacket? Nobody in their right mind is going to reach by your feet while you're sleeping and attempt to pull your wallet/passport from your bag.

Indeed.
If I put my wallet in my laptop bag in an overhead bin, it might get stolen one flight in a million, but I doubt it. If I put it in the seat back in front of me, or by my feet, I'd probably forget about it and walk off the aircraft without it one flight in 100. Let's face it - the person most likely to cause the loss of my possessions is me, through simple carelessness and forgetfulness.

I more apt to lose things when trying to be too careful as well..

Keeping a passport in a bra sounds incredibly uncomfortable!
I keep my items in the overhead above me, and I stack items such that the person would have to remove my coat / jacket, and the bag itself to access my purse or passport.

I used to keep my passport in my pockets until one time in Romania when I felt my passport moving I reached down and grabbed a gypsy's hand that was in my pocket trying to remove my passport. Now I keep it so far buried in my carry on bag (that goes in front of my feet) so that it even takes me a minute or two to remove it.
