Why don't airlines make huge people buy 2 seats!?

Sorry if I seem irate but I just spent the last 1.25hrs literally CRUSHED on a USAir flight. It was one of those small regional death trap lear jet planes with 2 rows on each side of the aisle. If you are only 5' tall you still need to duck to walk through.

I have the aisle seat and a man 6'3" and Id estimate at least 300lbs is next to me in the window. How he even got in the seat without smearing soap all over himself is beyond me. I dont even think the seat belt got around his stomach. He took up his seat and 60% of my seat and was also crushed up against the seat in front of him. I would even go so far as to say that size person should be prohibited on that size airplane. I actually spent the majority of the flight sitting on the toilet as it was more comfortable!

Im in line now at customer service to see if I can get a refund of sorts. Im sick of these hippos on these airplanes. They know how big they are and should be required to buy 2 seats.

wow that sounds awful. while calling someone a "hippo" is uncalled for, im not going to lie, when I see a very large person boarding I am always praying its not next to me....Its not fair to either customer......I hope you get some resolution.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry: BlackBerry8530/5.0.0.1030 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/417)

Some airlines do, in fact, require POS (passengers of size) to purchase two seats. And if we're lucky, those two seats will even be next to each other.

As to OP's specific question, many carriers do either require the purchase of a second seat or deny boarding to those who do not safely fit within one seat.

As to OP's specific complaint, the issue needed to be resolved with the FA and, if necessary flight crew, while the flight was still open. Not much to be done after-the-fact.

It seems there are a lot of unpleasant types of people on these airplanes, if you know what I mean.

In Canada the airlines are required to provide an extra seat free of charge for passengers of size:

That's not quite accurate. According to your link:

To request extra seating at no extra charge, medical approval is required

Then I'm not sure what your point was in posting here If there was an issue with your seating arrangement it should've been brought up to the FA before departure.

I'm not sure where the inaccuracy is. Of course there is an eligibility test, or everyone over 98 lbs would be demanding an extra seat. If you legitimately need it, you get it.

I am certain to keep the armrest lowered and if it is not possible for the person next to me to fit into their own seat with the armrest lowered, then I contact a FA. I am not small by any means, but I make sure that no one else takes over some of my space by leaving the armrest up. If the person really did tka 60% of your seat, the only way that would have been possible is if you let him keep the armrest up.

My guess is that the poster meant not everyone who is a "passenger of size" has medical approval for a second seat.

even if you can get the armrest down, it can still be VERY uncomfortable sitting next to a customer of size.

Agreed. You need to speak up at the time.

I am larger than many, but not so large that the seat belt will not do up. I always keep the arm rest down, so that I do not encroach on the next person's space. Works for me and, hopefully, for the other person!

Did you say it to his face, he may have given you a refund of some sort outside the airport.

True. But making sure the armrest is down is a good place to start.

Am I correct in thinking that the armrest must be able to go down? And if not, the FAs must move somebody?
