I've never heard of this happening. Are you saying if you are targeted for additional security screening on the basis of the type of ticket and when you bought it that you are blocked from online checkin? Could you explain further?

i can't profess to really understand the inner workings of the ssss algorithm, but can offer some additional info about my ticket purchase habits:

-boss purchases ticket
-not a RR member (i realize this is stupid considering how much i like miles; i just never want to find myself in a situation where i end up having to do a wn mr)
-one way travel
-buy within 2 days of travel
-fly out of pdx, sna, sjc, oak, sea

in 12 flights this year, i've gotten ssss 9 times

Thanks guys for all of your replies. I did go ahead and book with Jet Blue. One reason I was concerned about using Jet Blue is...we already had another flight booked with them in September that they cancelled. It was an afternoon flight from IAD to FLL. Got an e-mail saying flight change, call asap. Well, I guess calling in the evening hours is not a good idea. Was on hold forever, then got a pretty unexperienced employee. She said they had automatically booked us on the evening flight. When I told her that wouldn't work, we would need the morning flight instead, after checking she said "we can switch you to that flight with no charge". After requesting seats for that flight, I find none assigned when I checked online. So, another call the next day to get seats. After this, I was a bit afraid to use them when flying to catch a cruise. Having used Southwest before with no problem, I thought maybe a better idea since they have more than one flight to FLL from BWI. Oh well, the cheaper price won out and we will be on Jet Blue. Thanks again for your help.
