I hate to state the obvious but, if you mist be in Business Class, then the ONLY strategy is to but a Business Class fare. If you are happy to travel in E+ then play around with SWUs etc., but don't expect to be upgraded as you'll only be disappointed.
For my TATL travel this year I've had as many op-ups (on AC) as I've had SWUs clear - one each.

If they are flying for leisure, well then that is a different story, and I have paid for C in a few of those situations.
Also, one of the things that the IRS is looking at right now to help raise tax revenue is to disallow deductions for paid premium cabin travel. Well, if that happens, then no business person will be paying for C or F! They're also talking about disallowing deductions for private jets, which Warren Buffet personally complained to the Administration about, saying that it would destroy his NetJets operation. The world is a-changin'.

How does one see upgrade availability on Continental flights?
Hope this fits along with the flow of this thread.
As with many others, it is frustrating to see NO immediately confirmable upgrades on most international United flights. On United.com, I do know how I can find the NC code/availability on flights. How does one do that for Continental flights?
Thanks.
