Announcement 27 March 2012

Hi Everyone, obviously I'm a lilttle late to the game here, but, as you can see, today we’ll officially be introducing the new United MileagePlus Club Card. I know there’s been speculation on this, and I’m sure there will be follow-up questions. To start, here are some key highlights of the United MileagePlus Club Card:
  • As the card name suggests, a full United Club membership is included. If you already have a United Club membership, once approved for the card, you’ll be refunded for any unused portion of your membership as long as the refund is $15 or more (the refund is applicable to annual and three year memberships)

  • There are some key benefits, too. Just like our Presidential Plus Card, the new Club Card is designed to enhance your total travel experience. Here’s a list of the benefits (details for each can be found here):
  • Earn 50% more miles on ALL purchases. This is a new benefit. Cardmembers will earn at least 50% more miles on all purchases with the new Club Card. Specifically, for each $1 spent, Cardmembers will earn 1.5 miles, and when purchasing United tickets, the miles jump to 2 miles for every $1 spent on tickets
  • Free first and second standard checked bags for the Cardmember and one companion
  • Premier Access travel services, including priority check-in, security, boarding and baggage handling
  • Book award tickets close to the departure date without a fee. We’ll waive the fee for booking award tickets 21 days or less prior to departure. This benefit is reserved for certain Cardmembers and certain Premier levels
  • Get complimentary upgrades on award tickets (applicable for Premier members). Cardmembers who are also Premier members will be eligible to receive their complimentary upgrade benefits (where available) even when traveling on an award ticket in economy class
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Cardmembers will have access to last-seat award availability (applicable to general members)
  • As a Cardmember, miles don’t expire
  • Invitation to special Avis benefits and Hyatt Platinum Elite status
  • Inside Access from Chase. As a Cardmember, you will be delighted with opportunities to attend private, curated, once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Visit InsideAccess.com to learn about upcoming events
  • Access to the Chase’s Luxury Hotels and Resorts Collection special rates and benefits
  • Premier travel and purchase protection, including primary auto rental collision damage coverage
  • 24/7 Concierge Services

For those of you who already have a credit card with Chase, here’s some more information:

  • Already have a Mileage Plus Club Visa Card? You’ll find that the key differences are that the new Club Card has the added benefits of free checked bags, Premier Access, 50% mileage bonus on all purchases, award tickets close to departure date without a fee and complimentary upgrades on award tickets (applicable for Premier members where available). The new Club Card does not award Premier Qualifying Miles for purchases. More specific information about your current card and the new Club Card will arrive in the mail in late April

  • Already have the Presidential Plus Card? The key difference is that the Presidential Plus Card awards Flexible Premier Qualifying Miles for purchases whereas the new Club Card awards a 50% mileage bonus on all purchases. Both cards earn 2 miles for every $1 spent on United tickets. If you’re interested in changing over to the new Club Card, simply call the number on the back of your current card to discuss your options. While the Presidential Plus Card and its benefits will continue, we are not taking any additional applications for new Presidential Plus accounts

  • Already have another United card from Chase? If you currently have another United card from Chase and want to switch, call the number on the back of your current card to discuss your options

For a full list of details, and to apply for the new Club Card, please visit MileagePlusClub.com.

As always, please let us know your questions.

How long after applying for the card before I have UC access?
Chase / UA states (Offer Details)
Please allow 2 weeks after account open date for the United Club membership to activate
but it usually is quicker. At UCs, much of the time they will see it in under a week. *A lounges may require the physical card which may take 4-6 weeks. Those accepting the virtual card should work about the same as UCs.

Quick question - do the award upgrades qualify for people you sponsor using your miles?
No. Only the cardmember gets the upgrade benefit for award tickets. You cannot use miles to upgrade, only EUA and only you.

For what it's worth some people have had luck calling a club directly and nicely asking for a code from one of the vouchers.

Not going to say which ones but for non elites looking to get the fee waived it is an option.

Though going in person is not all that tough so hope people only try thus if they have travel coming very soon where the club access is of use.

I received mine via UPS yesterday, 72 hours after applying online (in response to an email). I have to say that both the packaging and the card were quite impressive - more impressive than my Platinum Million Miler materials, and that wasn't bad, itself.

I viewed it like krockwell, as a way to be cheap and get a year's free UC membership.

I, too, am curious as to whether my UC membership is visible before I receive the card, since I'll be traveling next week and would like to use the lounge.

In the clubs I have been in, the brochures are in the entrance, before you even get to the checkin desk. Even if you are not a member, you should be able to walk in and grab one.

I just stopped into the check in area of the main EWR club and there were no brochures. I asked an attendant about them and she said I'd have to call chase.

One way to verify is to log in to united.com and try to apply for a a UC card (on this page). If you're already in the system, it will let you know that you are a card member and won't let you apply for a card.

Thanks very much! That worked perfectly.

Just to update - I also called the Club number, and they confirmed that I can flash my Premier Platinum card (or give my MP number) at the door and I'll be admitted.

I applied on Wednesday of last week and status available on Monday, so very efficient.

I have to give big props to Chase and how slick the process seems to work. The card looks and feels cool, too.

It sounds like the card is similar to the Chase Sapphire card in terms of look and feel. A hard steel card instead of plastic.

I think the big clubs at EWR and IAH have checkin before the doors so the brochures are probably past checkin around where the flight service agents are.

I just received mine today and its smooth and no numbers on the front. Your name is only raised item on the front of card.

Name, card number and exp date are raised on the back side.

The card has a slightly heavier feel to it and you can see silver around the edge. Card still has some flexibility so it wont change your wallet feel.

I've liked this design on the PPlus card since they introduced it but I have run into issues with it from time to time. Whenever I've been forced to use a manual credit card imprinter, I've had to break out my AMEX because of the lack of raised numbers on the PPlus.

Also, with the name, number, and Mastercard logo on the back of the card, as well as the stripe being fairly close in colour to the rest of the card, I've lost track of how many times I've had to tell cashiers which side of the card to swipe or the right way to swipe it.

So, while the design is pretty cool, it's not entirely functional.

I was thinking that also, the more I look at this card. I will be going to Europe next month was thinking this card could possibly cause some problem!

I just upgraded my current visa to United MP Club Card since I charge literally everything, including my utilities, on credit card then pay off monthly (as a way to itemize my spending). Since I am going to cut back on my flight with UA (not a happy member at this time), with this credit card I will still be able to get the extra miles with my spending. Not a bad deal. I hope to get this card before my upcoming trip to Asia at the end of the month.
