UA506 return to gate July 4 2024

Live report

Sitting in UA506 FCO to SFO. Plane pushes back on-time and we sit on the taxiway. All seems normal. Captain announces we are returning to gate. Security boards and then asks a a family of 3 (a few rows behind us) to deplane. A bit chaotic as the family says not our fault and then finally deplanes. Not sure what the issue is.

Any thoughts why there were asked to deplane? The family wasnt drunk or anything like that.

Almost certainly an issue with US Immigration - and not necessarily the familys fault.

One would have thought this would have been addressed at check-in. 😊

Just as an FYI -- There are two different methods available to air carriers to transmit APIS data to CBP -- either during check-in or in batch mode 30 minutes prior to departure. If this was in fact an immigration issue it's possible it was caught during the batch transmission.

Seems like doing it on-demand at check-in would have the benefit of avoiding things like this.

Agree -- and I think most airports do -- but there are airports that don't have the infrastructure to support that capability in real time -- so they batch it... Last time we were through FCO (last year) it was still the "antiquated" check in area for US flights -- so it could be a function of that...

The reason for the requirement that data is sent 30 minutes before departure is to provide time for CBP to respond. So real time at check in doesnt guarantee real time responses.
