Wiki note about the forums several, active Channel 9 threads.

Offering live ATC communications on UA flights on Chanel 9 of the audio entertainment system (Channel 9) is exclusive to United and offered at the Captains discretion. This forum has four prime, active threads about Channel 9. This note will guide you to the right thread for your post, or to where you would look for those channel 9 posts youre interested in.

1) This discussion thread to pursue issues about Channel 9 availability. (See the next paragraph. if you merely wish to list the flights offering or not offering channel 9.)

2) A thread intended as a basic status thread only to list the specific channel 9-equipped flights offering or not offering Channel 9. The thumbs-up/down codes used in the thread are:
^ Channel 9 offered on this flight but no announcement made about it.
^^ Channel 9 offered and crew announced or promoted its availability.
Channel 9 not offered on this flight.
Channel 9 availability reports (no discussion)[Consoldidated]

3) A thread, to discuss interesting things heard on Channel 9, such as interesting exchanges between pilots and controllers or asking about pilot-controller phraseology. The Consolidated "Interesting Things Heard on Channel 9" Thread [Merged]

4) A thread to discuss Uniteds progress in converting legacy Continental aircraft to offer Channel 9.
Anyone get channel 9 on a reconfigured CO or PDE aircraft yet?

The following aircraft types have "From the Flight Deck" installed (commonly known as "Channel 9," as that's the location it is found on audio handset selectors):
pmUA 777-200ERs
pmCO 777-200ERs
pmUA 777-300ERs
pmUA 777-200As (high density, first class only)
pmUA 767-300ERs
pmCO 767-400ERs
pmUA 757-200 (28J p.s.) NO LONGER IN FLEET
pmCO 757-200 (16J p.s.) -- effective with cabin refresh announced October 2019
Narrowbody aircraft (both pmUA and pmCO) with NEXT retrofit

[pmUA A320 and A319 aircraft have had it removed. It is not installed on any 737s, 787s, nor pre-2019/2020 cabin refresh program pmCO 757-200s (16J p.s.) or pmCO 757-300s.]

The Moderators may move misplaced posts to conform to these thread aims.

Most of the MAXs, or any of the AVOD 737s, do not yet have Ch.9 activated. I don't have any stats but I'm seeing it active on no more than 20% of the AVOD airplanes I fly. The activations are proceeding.

Many of the F/As that I fly with have never heard of Ch.9. Many of them are still new to UAL and haven't flown very much in the widebodies that have it.

As I said before, the awareness of Ch.9 is relatively low among the 737 pilots I've flown with. Most of us have never flown a UAL airplane with Ch.9 before. (Well over 50% of the pilot group has been hired post-merger) Keep asking. Thank the Captain when it is on to reinforce how many of us like the feature, and avoid making comments that might discourage some from turning it on in the future.

Thank you for that input. Channel 9 used to be one of my favorite things about flying United (since I was a kid), and it's very disappointing that it's almost always off even when the plane has it.

What does everyone call it when making a request for it? I've been saying a mouthful, "Channel 9 from the Flight Deck", since I'm never sure what phrase the crew are accustomed to. Anyone have something less clunky?

From the early 2000s until the mid-2010s when Channel 9 was THE feature which differentiated United Airlines from its competitors, I alway connect to Channel 9 as soon as I settled into my seat, and I had the pleasure of listening to Channel 9 in French on approach to CDG (I am fluent in French so it helps), and I even listened to Channel 9 on approach to Beijing and Hong Kong. In those days, Channel 9 was prominently advertised by United, and it was announced by the pilots and by the crew as you board your flight so that everyone knows to tune in.

So fast forward to today: until Channel 9 is once again be prominently advertised by United and until its availability is proactively announced by the flight crew, its going to be a disappointment each time people try to connect to it on any United aircraft. I have attempted this futile exercise regularly since early this year, and I have yet to be successful. So I am not going to bother to try anymore, unless I hear an announcement of its availability from the flight crew.

It depends on who you're talking to. Ch.9 is easier to type and what the legacy UAL crew and passengers will know. From the Flight Deck is what it's called on the AVOD systems. Your approach covers all bases.

Was that an older 737-900 with NEXT upgrade, or a newer 737 MAX9?
