And full service travel agents that didn't charge a fee.
And free playing cards.
And 5 inches of space between coach seats.
And when a reservation did not require purchase to hold the seat at that price.
And when a call to customer service got your FF # on an award ticket for mileage accrual.
And when award tickets were upgradeable.
When airports used to proudly announce arrivals of flights.
When one only had to show up at the airport 5 minutes before a flight because the traveler's time is valuable.

When safety cards were on big 8.5 X 11 brochures with real photographs of each aircraft....
When speakers were in the armrests and the sound passed through the special cord (basically an air tunnel) to the headset....
When the then-called stewardesses would give me "wings" to trace on my coloring book.

It's the smokehouse almonds I miss. First time I ever saw them was on an airplane circa 1968. Still my favorite nuts to this day.

From another perspective (employee class):
- bagels and cream cheese at the gates in EWR
- mimosas upon boarding
- Always wide-open in FC (bumped only once in 5yrs)
- FC DC-10 service EWR-ORD-LAX (RT every week for a year)
- Sundae cart
- smoking section with empty seats to smoke in then switch back to non-smoking to eat and sleep
- food, champagne, some food, GOOD wine, deli, and - did I mention sundaes and more food?
- visiting family and friends for the holidays traveling employee class
- always room for carry-on bags (all 3 of them)
(My step-mother was a "stewardess" when I was a teen-ager.)

As scary as this may sound, I have flown on some airlines recently that still have the sound coming from the seat which then is harnessed by the hollow tubes of plastic. One airline's seat width was so minuscule that my thigh squished the stupid tube (which was smartly placed inside the armrest) and I couldn't listen to the music anymore.
Im not sure that is something to reminisce about it..

Why is everyone talking about ice cream sundaes in the past tense? We still have that service in FC on international and transcon lunch and dinner flights, same as always. (Unless there has been a very recent change on the transcons that I am not aware of, as I have only been working int'l flights lately.)

Well, I know it's what Southwest is famous for, but what about PEANUTS? I like 'em. United used to have them.
but thank you Matthew Clement for mentioning my favorite piece of software ever, United Connection.
