Most flights have no open seats at the gate these days so it's pretty hard to designate a service person as a companion and get a UDU for him/her. The other night at ORD there were three at my gate in uniform, but a long list for standby upgrades with F checked in full. I had a few 1K drink vouchers and I went over to each and gave them one -- though not sure if they are allowed to drink in uniform, let alone two of the three didn't look to be over 21 (I'm Canadian so am used to 18/19 drinking age). Once aboard, I also spoke to the in charge and told him I'd like to buy them each a meal box if they wanted one.
So if you can't get them into F, you can buy them a drink and a meal...and it certainly made me popular with the FAs on that flight!

I really dont understand how this thread even went in this direction considering the sideways comments had nothing to do with the question. There are no rules stating someone cant give up their seat (please correct me if im wrong, but nothing in this thread leads me to believe otherwise).
I think its funny the comparissons that are being made such as "the pilot earned his wings and cant let anyone else fly", "Cute girl jumping in line", "guy in the office got the trip and gave it away" yadda yadda. These are completely different ball parks in my opinion.
Bottom line, if an upgrade is cleared for someone in front of you, its theirs to do with it what they will. You dont like it, fly more and increase your status. Pretty black and white to me. I know the pecking order as does everyone else here. If your below someone else, thats too damn bad, you didnt have a chance anyway. That 1 person is still on the flight, and still out ranks you.
Oh, and for the record, i pretty much hover around premier/premier exec status and rarely see upgrades out of DEN (or even COS for that matter). When I see an uber elite give up his seat to someone out of kindness, the first thing I think is, "wow thats pretty damn cool" not "wow I should have ranked up 1".
One thing is for damn sure, more gestures like this are greatly needed in this nation (apparent in this thread). So sick of this thankless, give me everything I have earned AND havent mentality driving us away from any sense of values and appreciation.
Keep giving those seats away folks, you certainly have my support. Most of us Jet Set desk jockeys havent endured half of what most service men have and a little discomfort in Econ is nothing.....

+1 here. And anyone who has a problem with it should spend a few days on the front lines next to these uniformed "government workers" who are putting their lives on the line to protect your right to spew all this petty blathering.
