Charging for Alcohol on transatlantic

The (London) Times today had a small story in their travel section saying that Continental will start charging $4 for alcohol in Y transatlantic from 1 July.

Not a good trend!

That's interesting that this news has gotten published so quickly in the UK, though.

CO might think this is no big deal for Americans used to paying for drinks, but this might end up being a major pain for Europeans deciding which airline to fly transAtlantic.

I don't know the exact numbers, but I fly every three weeks into MAN and I feel like a foreigner on CO planes. I always assumed UK residents would be true to their country's airlines but this is not the case that I have seen. My flights are probably 60 - 75% UK residents.

Excellent point, but I believe that's a situation peculiar to the UK, where US carriers serve more gateways than UK carriers do. If I lived in MAN I wouldn't connect through Heathrow unless I had to either. But I would bet that out of CDG, AMS, FRA, etc. locally originating traffic is < 25% of enplanements.

I think this is way too low as well. Pre-9/11, my FRA flights were heavily German, my AMS flights seemed an even split, and my CDG flights seemed heavily American, though not 75% American.

This was all pre-9/11. Some Europeans may be more reluctant to fly US carriers now.

Looks like this new "initiative" of CO's came into effect last week, I wonder what the initial response has been to this. Anyone seen / heard any reactions?

At $4 each, it's a good thing none of my 16 serial-numbered Complimentary "Continental Currency" coupons, Form OPP-2423, A-652, has an expiration date. "International" flights include the Pacific, too.
